    I agree with Messrs Spencer and Zimmerman but you are making the assumption that not reading books is the same as not having investigated or understood the issues.

    Do you think I need to read the Old Testament, the New Testament and Das Kapital before I have an opinion on the failures of organised religion or communism? Our sectarian chums on here can testify to the damage caused by schisms within Christianity and you need look no further than Pol Pot, Mao or Stalin to see the wholesale slaughter created in the name of Communism.

    I haven't read Mein Kampf either but I don't like Nazis.

    Go on then, who said this?

    "“There is a bye-law in Durban which requires registration of coloured servants. This rule may be, and perhaps is, necessary for the Kaffirs who would not work, "

    and who said this?

    “Kaffirs are as a rule uncivilised – the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live almost like animals. Each ward contains nearly 50 to 60 of them. They often started rows and fought among themselves.

    One cannot criticise Hitler without having read Mein Kampf first.

    There’s some good stuff in The Bible. Would recommend.

    Thy two breasts are like two roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies.

    Thy lips drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue. How much better is thy love than wine! And the smell of thine ointments than all spices.

    -Solomon’s Song

    And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:
    And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,
    And cried with a loud voice, as when the lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

    - Revelation

    etc.

    Only two books I have read more than once are LOTR and the Hobbit. Might explain a lot and I might have done better than a C at O Level English Literature if I had bothered to read The Merchant of Venice and Hard Times in greater detail.

    I wouldn’t bother with Dickens, he’s pretty turgid imo.

    Shakespeare, on the other hand, was the absolute boss. Force feeding the wrong plays to kids often puts them off, unfortunately.

    I quite like Ecclesiastes

    One generation passes away, and another generation comes;
    But the earth abides forever.
    The sun also rises, and the sun goes down,
    And hastens to the place where it arose.
    The wind goes toward the south,
    And turns around to the north;
    The wind whirls about continually,
    And comes again on its circuit.
    All the rivers run into the sea,
    Yet the sea is not full;
    To the place from which the rivers come,
    There they return again.

    Earnest Hemmingway was a fan of it too :biggrin:
