With just seven runners in the Sussex Stakes, it was inevitable that virtually everyone managed to find traffic trouble. At least it made for an enjoyable race to watch and will lead to plenty of debating about what result we would have got without it. This is not a course for held-up-in-rear horses, so why do so many of them do it? In the stayers’ handicap, Coeur de Lion was a license to print money for the bookies for the second time in three years.

The record book will show that Siskin was the best of the two Classic winners, but was he? Kameko full of running but boxed in behind Circus Maximus, getting out way too late. Siskin got out of trouble earlier by going outside but had Mohaather sat behind him, who won fair and square with the runner-up having no traffic trouble up the front end. That does suggest that this year’s three year old milers are no superstars as Siskin’s turn of foot was not as good as that of Mohaather, who gave him weight and a beating. Credit to Ryan Moore: he got the tactics right on Circus Maximus but once again found one too good in this race.

There is surely going to be a temptation with Kameko to go for the Juddmonte, but is he good enough to get past Ghaiyyath?

Coolmore ran the race to get Circus Maximus home. But nothing they did stopped Mohather. I think the best horse won. Certainly one for the older horses and I hope we've seen the back of these 4yo and upward races. Siskin ran OK but probably has an easy 8f limit.

The staying 3yos now have something to prove for the generation. I suppose tomorrow is the start,

Credit to Murphy for holding his hand up and taking responsibility. Being on the rail with a fancied runner and 3 Ballydoyle runners was not an ideal place to be in hindsight and he will learn from his error. Not sure Kameko would have beaten the winner though.

Yes, that does look discourteous of me, only a neck in it at the end. See CSF paid £22.52, so an R/F would have shown a decent profit. Bravo to both of you! (Oh, mine finished in the dreaded 4th spot, beaten necks and heads and whatnot! :emoticon-0120-doh:)
