Exactly and this is why they always fail-cheap-cheap-cheap.

Gerrard is not coming here because of experience-he is wanted because of his name. Money Money Money but that will not last long when he runs of with his fingers in the air.

Searching for a philosophy: Bristol City target Steven Gerrard's playing style at Rangers
The Liverpool legend has been identified by the Robins board as their preferred candidate to succeed Lee Johnson

Whether or not you think Steven Gerrard will be a likely or even suitable fit for Bristol City, you can't fault the club's ambition in trying to bring the Rangers manager to the Championship.

Gerrard still has four years to run on his contract at Ibrox, having been hired in 2018 to try and break Celtic's dominance over Scottish football.

The 40-year-old will take some serious convincing that City are the club for him, given Rangers gravitas as a football club and the allure of potentially becoming the man to stop Celtic.

But, at the same time, there is considerable appeal to the Robins in terms of the infrastructure, facilities, ambition and the potential to become a Premier League club.

This isn’t the first time this summer Gerrard has been linked with a managerial vacancy in the English Championship. Birmingham City reportedly tried to lure the former England and Liverpool captain only for Gerrard to knock back their approach (as per Football Insider), content with continuing at Rangers for the time being.

There is plenty to keep Gerrard north of the border for now, with Rangers challenging for major honours and playing in European competition (they are not out of the Europa League yet), but what would the 40-year-old bring to Bristol City were he to take the job? What sort of manager is he?

It has taken Scottish football fans some time to work out Gerrard as a coach and even still, his philosophical outlook on the game is unclear.

When he first arrived at Ibrox in 2018, Gerrard imposed a 4-3-3 formation on Rangers. There has, however, been a change since then in the way he sees the attacking third and the way he supports Alfredo Morelos as his central striker.

Rangers now tend to play in a 4-2-3-1 shape, in which they have had greater success in breaking down opposition teams that sit deep and absorb pressure. This was something Gerrard struggled with somewhat in his first year in charge, with Rangers simply too easy to hold at arm’s length while deploying a low defensive block.

Scott Arfield tends to play as an orthodox number 10 behind Morelos, while Ianis Hagi (son of Romanian legend Gheorghe Hagi) has been given something of a free role around the attacking third since signing in the January transfer window.

This leaves Rangers without wingers, but full backs Borna Barisic and James Tavernier provide width in the full-back positions.

Domestically, this gives Rangers a greater chance of breaking down defensive outlets, but Gerrard has actually achieved his best results in Europe, where the Ibrox side are often underdogs. The likes of Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara provide a solid foundation at the base of the midfield on these occasions.

Gerrard’s willingness to play with what are essentially two number 10s means Rangers are able to swarm opponents very quickly high up the field when they lose the ball.

They aren’t a high-pressing team in the way Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool or Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are, but Gerrard likes his side to play up the pitch for the attacking and defensive benefits it brings.

As a man manager, Gerrard can be a tough figure to please. More than once over the last two seasons the former midfielder has called out the mental fragility of his team, as if he is frustrated his players are not up to the level he was as a player. Such an approach has, at times, worked against Gerrard.

But there is little doubting his capacity as a natural leader. That is something which he has managed to carry into the dugout, with Rangers fans rallying behind Gerrard from the moment he walked through the door at Ibrox.

The Bristol City support would likely feel a similar bond with the 40-year-old and his track record north of the border hints at what sort of team he would build at Ashton Gate.

Ive said before, I don’t think money is the issue here, I think it’s more likely to be the operating structure and restrictions that the Head Coach has to adhere to that would deter some experienced managers who are used to being given a freer role to buy and sell who they like from accepting the position.
Gerrard probably has more authority at Rangers that SL would give him as Head Coach of Bristol City.
    It’s just a guess - I’m assuming.

Genuine question, to get you back into Ashton Gate would it be Gerrard or Hughton?

I think RP prefers Hughton - as do I from the current rumoured candidates
BUT - I will support WHOEVER is appointed.
