Just been reading an article in the Sunday papers about how the country are becoming more supportive of British farming which echoed conversations between me and my good lady suggesting we should have a massive let’s all buy British campaign . This should help in the recovery from the downturn in trade due to Covid 19 , I know of a few people furloughed because parts aren’t available from abroad let’s start making them ourselves and not become reliant on imports . We are British let’s support Britain !!!

I think there was a campaign in the 1970's about buying British, but I think its much more important now. I don't live in the UK, but if I did, then yes, I would buy UK as much as I could.

We certainly need to manufacture more and have a mixed economy, but you need a government with more than a short term profit motive to do this, don't think we have one, or any chance getting one soon...

We don’t make as much as we used to , as a country we are quite capable of reversing this as we can be quite inventive and need to revive our economy . We need a lot of entrepreneurs to help in this regard and build better business contacts within their field . We have allowed our competitors to take our business abroad let’s start the fight back , this type of campaign has worked in the past - it can work again .

Problem is the sheer cost of production here, and the fact that there’s no way we can level it out.

Certainly that’s the case with clothing etc, only budget brands are manufacturered here, I’m sure there are areas we could reignite, the fact that contact centre jobs were moved back from oversees is a sign that sometimes quality can outweigh cost.

Post Brexit we now need to import and maintain good relations ...

Normally agree with you but we are now in a position where we have to say enough is enough things have to change , I’m not saying we have to cut off our nose to spite our face , we need to encourage the entrepreneurs and need to offer suitable incentives to encourage business development in areas that you say we have surrendered- if we have done it once we can do it again. The Phoenix arises !!!

Thing is, it's not just the UK... almost the entire world has outsourced almost any manufacture they had to China over the last 20 years. It's going to be tricky for the west extricating themselves from that any time soon, and even more difficult as we try to do a similar thing with the EU at the same time.

That said we need to sort out the UK manufacture though.. and I can't believe that we've let ourselves get into this position. I think the UK needs to look at what was working for China and try to emulate part of it - and I think a UK Investment Bank making strategic decisions is the way forward. I wasn't for leaving the EU, but now we're doing it we need to make the best of the options it gives us. The rest of the west needs to seriously consider it too.

I'm all for the free market, but the current state of affairs is that our economies are organic but rudderless. China has the ability to trade within that free market whilst their government is bankrolling strategic projects that further advance their ambitions. Their government made it possible for mega factories to be financed.. now some have a bigger output than some small nations.. it seems a pretty simple thing to to but we've been shackled by our own rules so haven't been able to make similar strategic decisions.

Boycotting Chinese goods won't be possible for a long while yet... not unless you're planning on going feral anyway, and you'll still hurt UK companies too. As with most things, change needs to come from the top and an investment bank fits for me.

One thing that this pandemic showed us is that the world in general is far too reliant on China.

The problem is that the big companies are happy to manufacture goods there because of the low wages. Now, if the western world stopped buying goods manufactured in China or imposed huge tariffs then those companies would possibly look at moving their manufacturing operations elsewhere. One downside to this is that China is the largest importer of goods/raw materials/food from most other countries.

Unfortunately the western worlds desire for bigger pay checks has made quite a lot of manufacturing unsustainable at home and seeing as property prices have risen to the extent that they have i can't see many people wanting to take a pay cut.

Sadly we've allowed this to happen ourselves and are now seeing the difficulties in extracating ourselves from it.
