What is difficult to comprehend is that there is no one living today that was involved in slavery and there is no one living today that was a slave, sometimes you have to draw a line under a topic and learn from it. My grandfather on my dad’s side was a liar and cheat involved with all sorts of dodgyness, a proper wrong ‘un so should I be held accountable for his crimes even though I have never known him?

The statue wasn't erected to glorify the slave trade. He worked for a company that was involved in the slave trade. Anyone who works for the Guardian is in the same position since the founder of that was involved in the slave trade. In 250 years people might consider anyone who drove a petrol or diesel powered car to be the scum of the earth, we're moving away from them now slowly, so if there is a statue of Henry Ford should that be pulled down? All races were involved in the slave trade, it was normal because they considered slaves, black or white, to be less human than them. Who has to apologise? I have Irish heritage as far back as I know but before that I have no idea. I'm not going to apologise for slavery just because I'm white. More black people were, and still are, involved in slavery so all black people should apologise. The Egyptians, The Romans, the Greeks... All had slaves so does every Egyptian, Italian and Greek need to apologise? I don't blame every German for the two catastrophic World Wars they started and that was much more recent. It's ridiculous and that is why sensible people, black and white say that everyone needs to get past the horrors of slavery.
That is absolutely not what I am saying and I cannot see how you get that from my post. I can only speak for the UK but today there is no systemic racism, sexism, misogyny and there is acceptance of personal identity. Of course there will be individual cases of each because people have radical views, at either end of the spectrum, but it's not systemic as it was up until quite recently. I'm going to pick up on one thing you posted, "because of failures in African countries..." What do you think is the cause of those failures? The question I was asked years ago was just after another Live Aid. The person who asked me asked, "how much money will it take to sort out Africa?" Is it money? Is it culture? What is it? No one is asking the important questions because they'll be labeled a racist. I guess you'll mark me as a racist for asking the question. So be it. I know I'm not.
I suppose the point I was trying make, is why if Nigeria is a wealthy country, are they leaving the country. Is it because there is a lot of corruption and that the money isn't reaching the ordinary person. Did you say it was an oil rich country?
