Bristol City earmark Rangers manager Steven Gerrard for top job amid Premier League target EXCLUSIVE: The Championship outfit are eager to lure Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard from the Rangers dugout. Lansdown is looking for a new boss for his Championship outfit after sacking Lee Johnson last weekend following a run of nine games without a win. He has drawn up a shortlist that includes Liverpool legend Gerrard, 40, who has spent the last two years in charge of Rangers in Scotland. Former Brighton boss Chris Hughton, Charlton’s Lee Bowyer and Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Lowe are also in the frame. But Lansdown believes that Gerrard is the man to fulfil his ambition of mounting a bid to win promotion to the Premier League next season. The Liverpool legend only put pen to paper in December on a deal that ties him to Rangers until 2024 so won’t be easy to tempt away. Gerrard has been tipped as Jurgen Klopp’s long-term successor at Anfield after impressing in his first management role. Even though he is yet to win a trophy Rangers have made giant strides towards closing the gap between themselves and arch rivals Celtic under his leadership. City pulled the trigger on Johnson following last weekend's defeat to Cardiff. The club's chief executive, Mark Ashton, said: “We recognise the huge amount of work that Lee has put in over the last four and a half years to move this club forward and we thank him for all his efforts. “There have been some special moments over those years and Lee has played a significant part in them. “However, success in football is ultimately judged by results and league position and the board believes that a change of management is needed now for Bristol City.” https://www.express.co.uk/sport/foo...Manager-Steven-Gerrard-Rangers-News-Exclusive https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2020/07/...argeted-by-bristol-city-owner-steve-lansdown/ https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/sport/football/rangers-news-steven-gerrard-liverpool-18583209
I don't want this bloke in charge of Bristol City, no management experience except a year in Scotland, worse choice than LJ, Sure he was an England and Liverpool superstar but he has no identity with us, no experience of our league, we have just had 4 years plus of new visions, surely leadership, experience, maturity and a proven winner is minimum acceptable criteria.
Chris Hughton would want to see the job through.Wants the job which says a lot after turning 5 down. Stephen Gerrard it would be a stepping stone if he was successful. Chris has got be the right choice-done it-been there-got the T Shirt.
If Mr Lansdown finds it an exciting way to spend his money then that's what we'll get. I too would go for Hughton but I can see Gerrard might generate a lot of press and Lampard did ok at Derby due to his contacts and top quality loans.
I prefer Gerrard to Hughton but if he is successful he will be off to Liverpool as soon as Klopp leaves
I want Steven Gerrard, to me Sky would be all over us as Steven Gerrards Bristol City. And players will want to play for us. Yes he might be a stepping stone to Liverpool but if they think he’s got it about him then is a bonus knowing we’ve got someone respected in their plans. However to get to Liverpool will mean he has to win something with whoever so why not us. Added bonus would be he will spot what we’ve all been crying out for and get a midfielder. Hughton good at getting teams out of this division got 2 but in fairness RR with all his chopping and changing of minds could of with Newcastle. But come Premier League is not that good like Warnock.
I agree, the 'draw' of Steven Gerrard lies solely in raising the profile of Bristol City. Hard to assess his managerial ability as he manages in Scotland, they only have 2 teams in that league, and the one he manages have been second twice under him..... I think we would get more players want to play under Stevie G than Chris H, and his contacts would be very useful, but for stability, I think we need someone a bit more proven.
That's fair enough, as he's Liverpool through and through, but to get the offer he needs to do something, i.e. wins a title or promotion, if that's with us then great, as it's mutually beneficial and I have no problem with that. You can't compare this to the Frank Lampard and Chelsea position, everyone knows Lamps only got that job as Chelsea were selling Hazard, had a transfer ban, and needed a manager that the fans wouldn't get on top of if things didn't go well this season, and who better than Lamps. As it turns out, he's done a great job, but he did have a wealth of good professionals and great emerging talent, we are on a different level to that.
As has already been said Gerrard is without doubt going to be like Lampard using us as a stepping stone eventually for the Liverpool job. So no from me, we need commitment.
"everyone knows"? Also Chelsea have always had emerging talent and so they should do, they robbed them virtually every club in Europe and the UK, but never really used them, I agree circumstances forced their hand somewhat, but with the huge investment in their academy and only pretty much John Terry actually making it, it wasn't actually the sort of production line say like Manu, when we signed Kalas he was their longest serving player and had made 1 appearance for them.
Took them to quarter finals of the Europa league this season didn’t he? Also Rangers are hampered by financial restraints and keep wages low compared to Celtic. Also and no way am I comparing Man U took a chance on a Scottish team manager, so not all of them are duds
As I said before, is closing the gap to making Scottish football a 2 horse race for a change, even though Rangers don't have the resources of Celtic, nobody else in Scotland has the resources of Rangers, so not a particularly difficult job really.
I certainly would not identify Gerrard as a dud, I simply don't think he is the right fit for us, we are not a stepping stone on some individuals career path plus we don't want another young inexperienced in Championship football 'un, we've just done that. A proven winner, with maturity and 100% commitment to Bristol City FC, someone who depends on this club for his and our future, we were promised Europe in 5 years I would rather have the Premier in 2.
Honestly our board always talk waffle with saying we want Premier League football ASAP, if they do then bloody appoint someone who's been their and done it
The Ryan Kent who played for us that we was all excited for before he played his first game. Or the Ryan Kent who Gerrard gets the best out of? Also I didn’t know they were a double act and it was part of the deal? Does it also mean Alfredo Morelos also joins?
Hope so because Morelos is rated at £10 million so if he’s also part of Gerrard, Kent deal we’ve got a bargain
