England World Cup hero and Leeds United legend Jack Charlton has died.

The 85-year-old passed away peacefully at his Northumberland home on Friday, his family said.

He had been suffering from a long-term illness.

Charlton, the older brother of Bobby Charlton, was part of England's World Cup-winning team in 1966.

He was a one-club man for Leeds United, making a record 773 appearances over a 23-year career as a player.

Widely hailed as one of the all-time great central defenders in the game, Leeds United said they were "deeply saddened" by the news.

His family said in a statement: "Jack died peacefully on Friday 10 July at the age of 85. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side."

Thanks for all the memories Jack especially that special day at Wembley in 1966. He was a credit to his chosen career and truly met all the requirements to be a hero in the sport. R.I.P. Jack and my thoughts are with his family at this time.

Another of the 66 legends gone.

I was reading about his feud with his brother Bobby, that was a very sad story and god knows how Bobby must be feeling at the moment.

RIP Jack, a real hero, always entertaining, very good manager and underrated footballer.

Saw Jack play in a semi final, when the cup mattered, against Man Utd in 1970 Villa Park.
It was the best 0-0 I've ever seen but my abiding memory of the game was how good a footballer Jack was.
Later on it was the same with Norman Hunter, again I couldn't believe his natural ability either.
Together for years as the central partnership for Leeds in their prime they were nigh on unbeatable.

Rip Jack, a real bloke and truly great CH.

Not a bad word has been said against him since he passed.
A giant of the game in more ways than one.
Could have sworn he played against us in the FA Cup 5th round matches of 1974, but he was apparently Manager of Middlesbrough at the time so he can't have done.

    RIP big fella <rose>
