For decades the smart play for business was to keep quiet to avoid pissing anyone off, because pissed-off people don't buy your stuff. In recent years the balance of public opinion has shifted and it's been made more and more clear to businesses that neutrality ain't an option, and consequently you see advertisers leveraging their dollars in this fashion.
