When football turned its back on traditional owners and embraced big business then it was signing its own death warrant. on a slightly different note I guess the takeover of the Barcodes as gone after the government issued sanctions against some top Saudis. Maybe we'll see Man City go pop.
It would be a perfectly sound business strategy in almost any other business area. You look to turn a modest profit and reinvest a portion of that so eventually the business grows and in turn your profits grow and the business flourishes. I think the biggest issue the Allams have is that they still don't get that football doesn't work like that. It has always been driven by egotistical owners willing to spend in order to buy success. And the fans love them for it. Operating profits are not the primary aim of most professional clubs, most owners spend way more than they should to compete for success - and that arms race only gets more expensive. Owners constantly take risky gambles in order to dream of promotion to the promised land of the EPL. Hoping to make money from producing players is getting harder and harder. The big clubs are hoovering up any decent players into their academy's in ever increasing numbers. And of the professional clubs there are at least 80 trying to do exactly the same thing. IMHO They're ****ed. Either carry on cutting costs to match income and end up in L2 with no prospect of getting their money back or spunk £100m (which they can't do) on the (slim) hope of getting back to the EPL and selling for £140m.
Theyarent doing it to make money it’s to cover costs Why do you think Brentford continuously sell players? can you point me to the championship clubs that the fans love the owners?
The Wigan takeover happened in the middle of the pandemic. It’s not as if the new owners were unaware of the situation. The season was already suspended. If their business plan failed to incorporate any plans to deal with potential problems that may arise during the current, & ongoing, pandemic then more fool them. I’d dock them another 12 for gross stupidity. **** owners
Yes I understand that. EDIT: well there is the money they make servicing the debt of course. To improve their income? Any successful ones in any given season (briefly). I said fans love it when owners overspend to buy success.
That will be up to the administrator to argue, but most clubs run at a loss, so this Pandemic has been the straw that broke the camels back.
But the EFL could and should argue that if the club was run properly and not at a loss then the pandemic wouldn't have had that effect, could be a dangerous president set if they allow them to do it without punishment, what's the stop others following ...
True, as I said we will just have to wait and see, but I guess it gives them a glimmer of hope, whereas under normal circumstances there won't be any.
Wigan Athletic owner Au Yeung Wai Kay defends 'difficult' administration decision Au Yeung Wai Kay insists Next Leader Fund LP had the 'best intentions' when taking charge of Wigan Athletic - despite the club being placed into administration less than a month later. In a statement released exclusively to Wigan Today, via his UK lawyers, he says the Covid-19 pandemic 'fundamentally undermined' any attempts to run the club successfully. All of which led to the 'difficult decision' to place the club into administration. "Wigan Athletic is a wonderful football club with rich history and a passionate fanbase," the statement read. "We bought Wigan Athletic with the best intentions: to create a team that would get the club back into the Premier League, and I have invested more than £40million. "Unfortunately, the Covid-19 crisis has severely impacted people and businesses around the world - and Championship football clubs, which rely on fans coming through the turnstiles, are no exception. "This has fundamentally undermined our ability to fund Wigan Athletic and, after struggling to find a solution. "In the end took the difficult decision to put the club into administration to ensure its survival. "The administrators are now doing everything they can to find a new owner who will secure the future of Wigan Athletic for the sake of the many thousands of devoted Latics fans, and the local community."
There's no way they will ever now get what they say they are owed. At least we can laugh at them thinking of how they let £100million slip through their hands. Genius.
