The supposed controversy surrounding the referee's decisions in the QPR v Villa game is most definitely unfounded. Before any QPR fans jump on this, let us please look at the facts. Gabby unquestionably had his shirt pulled. That is against the rules of football and, in that situation, it is a foul. There is a distinct difference between tussling in the box before a corner and a player running through on goal from open play. Neil Warnock stating in his interview that there was "no way" that it was a penalty is surprising given the clear evidence on the replay. I would, therefore, challenge Neil Warnock to go on record and state that shirt pulling is now allowed in football if that is indeed his opinion. Of course it is not allowed, and because his player pulled a shirt the penalty was justified. It doesn't matter how superficial the tug was, the fact is that pulling shirts is not permitted. It is as simple as that. The fact that the crowd did not react means absolutely nothing. The shirt pull was behind Gabby, and the crowd were in front of him. So, the QPR manager is wrong. He is also wrong about BOTH of the Hutton decisions. Let me make this clear- ordinarily the first Hutton handball WOULD be penalty. He did move towards the ball and it would normally be a penalty in my book. However, what Warnock apparently did not see was the fact that Joey Barton was mauling Shay Given on the goal line, impeding him and preventing him from making a save. Barton was doing that BEFORE the ball hit Hutton, so before a penalty the referee would have to award a foul on the goalkeeper. Had Shay not be clearly fouled on the line, I would perhaps feel sorry for QPR. As it happens, the two fouls cancelled each other out and play was allowed to continue. The third incident was easy- not handball in a million years. From that distance and in those circumstances it can only be ball to hand. Neil Warnock is a good manager, and seems to be a genuinely nice bloke, but I disagree with him on this one. As for the Michael Oliver, I think he had a great game and has no reason to think that there is any controversy to be ashamed of. The attention he is getting for this game is unfair and will not help this young referee. Now without trying to "jump on him" (which is the last thing I want to do...) I cant say I agree with him. The whole shirt pull thing is a bit, well it's hard to say. Did he hold his shirt, yes, did he impede him...well Im not sure. Agbonlahor appealed for a corner and in his post match interview didnt seem very convincing that he'd even felt it. Does holding a shirt mean a foul without impeding him. Does the intent make it a foul. If yes then it's still an incredibly soft penalty which I will never agree with. Bloody hell even Gary Neville said it wasnt a oen!! As for the Villa fans not appealing Im not buying that, they were in the upper tier and would have if anything had the best view looking down on it. Hutton's first handball, was a penalty everyday of the intergalactic year. He moved towards the ball and blocked a possible goal. Barton wasnt fouling him he was standing in front of him. Given wasnt attempting to reach the ball so he wasnt impeded, which is a big difference. But the second hand-ball...well I want to continue arguing but I cant...I really really want to but I just cant disagree with him there...so I'll just insult him instead. What an arsehole. What do you guys think having witnessed the replays?
I have watched the penalty incident back over a dozen times from Sky and Match of the Day and I am yet to actually see Traore having hold of the shirt!! The shirt was "billowing" behind him, which often seems to happen with him, but I'm not sure the shirt was held. Looks like Traore put out his arm to kind of shepherd the player away. Also there's no way the player was going to get to the ball. As for the rest of the Ref's game....Hutton's hand ball from the header was 100% a pen and at least one of the villa players should have received a 2nd yellow!! Oliver was a muppet!!
Did Oliver blow for the foul on Given?. If not, then your point does not hold and most definitely should have been a penalty. The only way that is not a penalty is the principle that a ref can / should only give what he sees. If he did not see it, what is he being paid for?! Robbed of two points by shoddy decisions. Hope that balances out in due course.
Yep, it's bollocks. Their pen, ridiculously soft and if someones shirt is pulled back, how do they end up sprawling forward? Our 1st shout, given wasn't being impeded, he wasn't attempting to move toward the ball, if he was, he would have been awarded a free kick, 2 wrongdoings don't cancel each other out in football. The ball was then goal-bound, and whether Given would have saved it or not, it was handled. Penalty. Our 2nd shout, no pen, never in a million. I think everyone agrees on the above. Still, it's done now, let's move on.
Scotland i would argue the point about him running in on goal even if traore had not so called tugged at his shirt their was no way he would have reached that ball, the header from derry onto hutton was a def penalty.
By posting a thread on a forum regarding a match this specific page was involved in? Have I got the wrong place?
I wrote the non italics. Read the italics from an article. Why would I write an article only to contradict myself lol?
The masons at the FA have got it in for us. For various reasons, including Warnock and the Faurlin debacle. Expect more dodgy decisions from hapless muppets like Michael Oliver. He cost us 2 points with his gross incompetence. Good to see Fernandez and Warnock speaking out.
The foul on Given and the handball are two separate incidents. You could say the ref was wrong to ignore both. Just because the ref missed the former incident, doesn't mean warnock was wrong on the latter.

As has been pointed out, if every tug, grope and pull was penalised there would be dozens of penalties awarded. The challenge was innocuous and the fact the referee was the only person who thought it warranted a penalty says it all. The first handball shout was a definite penalty, Hutton moved his arm to deflect the ball wide. The second was ball to hand from close range and you would consider it harsh to have a penalty awarded against you for that.
