Good Morning. It's Thursday 18th June, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road


The reintroduction of football should act as a milestone to our road to normality and recovery.

Football has returned to our screens, 100 days after sport in the UK was ground to a halt because of coronavirus. Whilst its great to have the most popular sport in the World back on the box, its important to remember that over 40,000 lives in the UK have been lost including inspirational legends of the game Norman Hunter and Trevor Cherry (who died suddenly a week after NH).

We must also remember the tens of thousands of small businesses and sole traders;l many of which have been financially devastated over recent times.

Most of all, lets also spare a thought for our brave men and woman who work for our NHS, risking their lives, so they can save others.

Lets hope that the reintroduction of football acts as a milestone to our road to normality and recovery.

What to do when football technology fails

Yesterday we saw for the first time football technology fail when Villa keeper Orjan Nyland carried Oliver Norwood's 42nd-minute free kick clearly over the goal line.

Unfortunately referee Michael Oliver Hawkeye only signalled for the goal during half time.

They say that decisions on the pitch even themselves out over the season, but with every goal in the Premiership being scrutinised before its given, that is not the case.

What if another team is relegated due to the extra point Villa collected?

Should the ref have awarded the goal at the start of the second half?

Where blatant mistakes are made, and the technology has a blip, should football authorities now reverse the result?

Potentially, the mistake may cost a club over 100m.

Was the remembrance overshadowed by BLM

During both Premiership games, we witnessed both sets of players 'taking the knee' in support of Black Lives Matter'. Whilst I'm sure we all support the cause, should yesterdays games have been more about the lives that have been taken, the brave NHS and the milestone celebrating the road to recovery?

What if a club, or player(s) feel uneasy about either 'taking the knee' or wearing 'Black Lives Matter' on the back of their shirt.

That doesn't make them racist, but, it that how they would be interpreted?

Are all clubs under pressure to copy the precedents set by the first four clubs?

Do you feel that remembrance for the coronavirus fallen was overshadowed by 'BLM'?

Good morning.

I feel sorry for Michael Oliver. He's been failed by the technology and by the time it's corrected there's nothing he can do about it. You can't give goals retrospectively. I usually say if a decision goes against you it's tough luck but Villa set out their moral position last season against us so the only right thing would've been for them to let Sheff Utd walk it in after half time.

 

Any player that refuses to take the knee or wear the shirt with BLM will be publicly crucified so they will just go along with it like the Olympians did with the nazi salute at the Berlin Olympic games in 1936.
James McClean refuses to wear a poppy every year and gets plenty of abuse for it but plenty of support from the football authorities who have punished clubs for failing to control their fans.

Villa should have let the Blunts score a goal, unopposed, it seems fair.

Taking a knee I can see why, but it does politicise entertainment which can have long term consequences.

Villa after what Leeds did to them should have given Sheffield a goal after the restart but the person to blame is Dean Smith he should be ashamed of himself.I hope they get relegated
I feel that we are overlooking what are NHS has done rather than concentrate on the racial issue

Watching and admiring the Championship side, talkSPORT Drive presenter Adrian Durham labelled Villa hypocrites.

“You’ve got to love the people running @Lufc Twitter account,” he wrote.

“And they’re right as well. Hypocrisy from Villa.”

Morning all.

I feel for Micheal Oliver. He has been let down by the initial technology and then his support around him.

Once hawker failed for whatever reason his assistant, who was in a good position, should have been brave enough to call him back on it.
Failing that VAR had enough camera shots to overturn the decision or at least tell him to take a look himself.

Dean Smith and John Terry just showed themselves for what they are last night. After bitching and crying so much last season the right thing last night would have been to give Sheffield a goal.

Villa fans on twitter were arguing that there was too much at stake and if it had been a nothing game they would have done.

You can't have it both ways. You are either an honourable club who do what's right or you are self serving scum who are excited that a technology fail to cover up your short comings.

 

avfc Dean Smith tells me in post match -at no stage did he consider ordering his players to allow #sufc to score unopposed, and he’s sure Chris Wilder wouldn’t have done either. Says Villa have had enough VAR decisions go against them this season to have deserved that one. #ssn

Firstly 2 wrongs don't make a right.
This statement shows that Bielsa is a bigger man than both of you put together, perhaps you could both stop with your continuous cheap shots, as neither of you can take the moral high ground.

 

Morning all. Have to say at this moment in time, having watched a few minutes of last nights stuff only, my only sporting focus right now, apart from golf, is Leeds remaining nine games. Just want us promoted now and don't give a damn anymore who wins what or relegated from what. If we blow it, its all pointless anyway

 

Well you know how I feel about politics in football, I don't think it should be in football. Some will say it's not political, if it was a message that included everyone from other cultures I could probably except it. I don't agree with McClean but he's doing what he believes in. I'm sure there are players who believe in anti racism but may not feel comfortable in what they're being asked to do. It's all about peer pressure. They can do what they want off the pitch. As for Villa, they are hypocrites and hopefully thay get what they deserve and that's to be relegated. Elland one last thing, you don't speak for me regarding BLM, All lives matter.....

 

You assume that Villa have a moral position to start with.

 

Ideally Villa and Brighton go down.

Villa because of the way the are and Brighton because we want Ben White permanently.

 

And Norwich, because..............................Norwich.

Morning all...

I was looking forward to watching some football yesterday but the kneeling, the BLM on the back of the shirts and obvious lack of atmosphere probably set the wrong tone for me, I turned off at half time, just couldn’t get into it despite desperately wanting Villa to lose.

Today I’ve found myself dreading our restart, it just feels like we have everything to lose. Before the break we were on top form, Fulham and WBA were completely out of form. It’s a big reset for our nearest rivals.

Add to that we are well supported home and away so no fans will hurt us more than others and we kick back off against a bit of a bogey team, I’m really dreading it.

Although the talk from the players sounds positive and they are all up for this. They know the prize at the end.
