Brilliant news today as Jonas decided to effectively pledge the rest of his career to the toon... i know many people used to hate the guy's style of play but i think the work he does for the team is brilliant and constantly works tirelessly and often thanklessly at either end of the pitch
however, what does this mean for our starting XI? my understanding was marveaux was effectively bought as a replacement for jonas...with him signing a new contract i cant see him being dislodged in the team as pardew obviously sees him as a key player in the set up...so what does this mean for sly? i cant see obertan being dropped for him as pardew seems very keen to keep him on the right, i cant see marveaux being best pleased at being a bit player coming on ever last 15mins to run at tiering legs
seems weird in light of pardew's comments which he was close to a start when asked what benny's chances of a start were, will he be playing in the hole any time soon? i just cant see it happening with benny clearly another one of pardew's key players
either way it's good news and will hopefully end the speculation surrounding guti's future (unless another ac situation arises) but surely this will leave marveaux quite frustrated and surley this isn't good for the dressing room
ps sorry if this has been said already only just got in and cba to trawl through the millions of contract articles

Marveaux was brought in as competition for the wingers (Barton and Jonas), Barton left, Obertan came in, therefore we now have actual competition for places. Marveaux can also play in the hole.

I'd play Marv ahead of Ober, but that looks unlikely atm. Then Marv, Jonas and HBA could play in a 4-2-3-1, and all swap positions to scare the hell out of defences, and tear them to shreds.

Marveaux prefers to play centrally I believe, although Gutierrez is also capable there as he proved at the end of last season. It means we'll have competition for the attacking midfielder slots, which is good.

Marveaux needs to earn the shirt and accept that there is healthy competition within the squad. I'm sure he will relish the challenge if he is made of anything. If he wants to be a prima donna let him, but he doesn't seem the type.

Loving the fact we are scratching our heads to see who should start rather than who could start

i apreciate he may be good cover, he just seems like a player who has greater ambitions than bench warming (unlike a certain mr owen) and may be frustrated by being constantly left out

    Competition, not cover.

He was brought in to play games. We will rotate the squad and suffer injuries.

Head scratching is potentially lethal for Obertan...

Jonas is good in certain aspects but should never be considered on par to a player such as Marv.

I agree in the long term Marv is defo the guy, no reason to get worried, i think in long term obertan will be a impact player, i see him a very good impact player.

Bit early to be talking like that, he's only made 2 starts, both against Championship sides.

Marv can cross, not a bad attribute for a winger now is it? :)

I agree it's refreshing he can cross but he hasnt done all that much to show us he's better than Jonas yet.

Marv can't track back as well or even move like Jonas but there's more needed from a starting eleven winger

Why do you consider Obertan an impact player? This is the first time in 2 years he has 6 games in a row and in the last game especially, he was very good. If he can improve his end ball I would start him every game!

In terms of Marv, the way I see it is as long as we keep this unbeaten run going, we keep the same team. Even one loss is not enough to change a team that is unbeaten for 6 games+ (if we get past wolves). You have to give them a chance to rectify that loss. I see Marv starting towards the end of the season when he sees how Jonas tracks back. Marv knows how to track back, but Jonas is a good example of how to do it in the system Pards wants.
