On the day so many jobs at Brough are lost, we get the council rejecting a major capital investment project in the centre of Hull.

How many of the traders at Hull Fair are from Hull and East Riding? The money the Fair makes goes sailing straight out of the city the moment the Fair is packed up.

Short term construction jobs and long term jobs, as well as the development of an eyesore was on offer.

Yes. Well done to the council for stopping that happening.

Hull City Council will not be selling the KC Stadium to Assem Allam, it was revealed this afternoon.

At a meeting today, Councillor Terry Greaghty told the millionaire Hull City owner the council was not willing to sell the stadium or the land around it.

Mr Allam wanted to buy the KC Stadium and surrounding land - including the Walton Street car park currently used for Hull Fair - to develop a £114 million sports village.

But Mr Geraghty, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, told the Mail the council must protect the interests of all the people who use the stadium and enjoy Hull Fair every year.

He said: "We wanted to clear the air and explain that we've no intention of getting rid of the KC Stadium or the fairground.

"We believe the land is traditionally for the fair and there is no other place we can put it.

"It draws in one million people each year.

"The KC Stadium is owned by the city and we want it to stay that way."

It comes despite previous claims by council leader Steve Brady that any decision to sell the stadium would be down to a public referendum.

The news may mean Mr Allam will focus his energies on developing a new £161 million stadium and sports village on land in Melton.

Hull City Council are unbelievable, unimaginably dim and short sighted.

Expect an announcement on Hull City's move to Melton in the next week.

I can't see it happening, but I certainly expect Assem to announce that it's going to.

Can't really see how this can end well for the club. If he can't buy the KC then allam has two options, either move to Melton or consider his lack of business opportunities staying at the KC as a tenant.

To be blunt, I hope we f**king well do. Leave the council with a white elephant.

I can't believe they are using the fair of all things as a justification for that.

Brainless, brainless, brainless. The Council are out of their depth on this, so go for the soft option about people enjoying Hull Fair! Yes people do but a development like this is whats needed now.

What a load of bull**** Mr. Councillors. :(

    Melton it is then.

What a set of tits the council are, as previous poster said what does the fair contribute to our economy?

Turning down a project that would create jobs all for a Fair.

Ah balls to the council and the KC move to melton Allams, Hull City will never grow in stature as a club unless we have an increased capacity, our own assests , top class training and youth facilities as well as alternate income (hotels) etc.

One million visitors to Hull fair each year ???? I seriously doubt that number, How much do the Council get from that 1 week a year ???? and just out of interest given the combined attendances at the KC (rugby and football), football average of 20,000+ last season over 23 home games 460,000 does that mean the Council are prepared to piss all these people off so they can keep the local businesses happy for that week. Ridiculous, especially given the statement that they were prepared to meet with the ALLAM`s to discuss the sale, but claimed the ALLAM`s had not approached them, bunch of lying egotistical w4nkers, little men syndrome me thinks ! Oh btw to all those local lads and lasses getting made redundant from Bae, heart is with you, but with this council good luck on finding opportunities.

I will no longer be going to enjoy fair after it being used as a piss poor excuse to not allow development of an area that is rarely used. The fair has been getting worse for years anyway.

Just in case anyone can't open links, here's Assem's statement:

"I offered a present to the city but I was refused.

"I am only sorry that the community will be deprived of a first class sporting facility for all the family, which would have been open every day.

"As I have said many times before, however, I am not prepared to build an extension on a rented house.

"I have always believed in the power of sport to enhance and improve communities.

"But the council choose Hull Fair in favour of the sports village, despite the fact that throughout it's history, Hull Fair has not stopped the crime rate in the city going up or the number of Asbos increasing in a way I believe the sports village could have.

"That is my final word on the subject. As far as I am concern the matter is now closed."

So we stay as a Championship mid table club.
no new training facilities or youth centre of excellence, to attract better players or the best young talent.
    no non playing assets
    no new income streams.

I dont think the council turned them down solely for Hull fair, if new jobs, income from events, lower crime rates etc where offered on the table.so it looks like am not the only one who thinks "this is my present to the people of Hull" balony doesnt quite sit right.we may not get an extra 5000 empty seats to look at but at least todays descision keeps us secure.ps i for one would choose not to support Melton f.c

Every now and then I forget how small minded and pathetic our council is. Then they remind me! Using the fair as an excuse is pathetic. A one week attraction over a permanent and long term feature should have been a no brainer. I will be sorry to see city move to melon, but if that is what it takes for the club to progress, then so be it.

Then what is the reason? It's the only one they can come up with. The paper's aren't out until tomorrow - I'm sure they'll have come up with a good enough reason by then.
