Quick, put me on ignore like the other 79 posters you have on ignore because they disagree with your opinion.

Isn't that what dictators do, silence their critics?

You go read some ACTUAL facts and ignore all newspaper articles. They are only telling their audience what they want to hear.

Sweden tops Europe COVID-19 deaths per capita over last seven days

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden, which has opted for a more open strategy in combating the virus than other European countries, had the highest number of deaths in Europe per capita from the COVID-19 disease over the last seven days, data showed.

Sweden has kept most schools, restaurant and businesses open during the pandemic. While deaths are on the decline Sweden had 6.25 deaths per million inhabitants per day in a rolling seven day average between May 12 and May 19, according to Ourworldindata.org. That was the highest in Europe and just above the United Kingdom, which had 5.75 deaths per million.

Over the course of the pandemic Sweden still has had fewer deaths per capita than the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Belgium and France, which have all opted for lockdowns, but much higher than Nordic neighbours Denmark, Norway and Finland.

Sweden’s strategy, mostly based on voluntary measures regarding social distancing and basic hygiene, has been criticised by some as a dangerous experiment with peoples lives but also been put forward as a future model by the WHO.

Sweden’s open strategy seems to have softened the blow on the economy, with growth shrinking much less than in Denmark and Norway in the first quarter.

(The story fixes typo in Ourworldindata.org in second paragraph)

Their current figures have already been acknowledged Kiwi.

The fact that the headline only covers the last 7 days tells you something. Their current deaths and new cases are slightly higher than other European countries like the UK and others. Their death rate is far lower. That is the calculated risk they have taken in order to save their economy getting thrashed.

At the moment, they are winning the battle as their numbers are average compared to other countries in Europe. In 6 months time, their figures may be so bad that they have gambled and lost. At the moment, considering the economic state of the rest of Europe, I think it is safe to say that they are winning the gamble compared to the rest of us.

I’m not understanding why my stupid comment about not realising there was a Politics thread was quoted ahead of your excellent post, SWR.

One of my pals is a good friend of Craig and sent me this a couple of days ago.

He's up in court soon on some trumped up charge with regards to the Alex Salmond case and contempt of court.

He runs a music festival I go to every year and he does lectures which would sit very well on the conspiracy thread, some of which can be quite interesting!

You said, Sweden got it wrong.

At the moment, there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that overall they got it wrong, especially compared to Johnson's government. With far less cases and a huge difference in death rates. their gamble is paying off right now considering where they stand economically compared to the rest of Europe. As and when the figures change and they overtake the UK death rate, then maybe you are right. Until then, you are WRONG.

I hope that clears up things for you.

They’ve had more deaths per million in the last half an hour though.

You can pick any time frame to suit your particular argument.

Fact remains, their rates of death and infections are far lower and their economy hasn't been thrashed.

I would much rather be Sweden right now than any other country in Europe. I am sure the families of the 37,000 ++ people who have died in the UK would agree.

At the moment Sweden's corona virus numbers are far, far worse compared to neighbours and similar countries in many ways, Norway, Denmark and Finland. Reported deaths per inhabitant are 9.5 times as many as Norway's, and infected more than double per inhabitant than Norway. To date Sweden look to have paid an extremely heavy price in lives for their gamble.

That's compared to other Scandanavian countries Oslo and I accept their figures are high compared to Denmark, Norway and Finland.

However, comparing their figures to other countries in Europe, their figures are average/middle of the road.

Compared to the UK, their figures are way lower.

Turkish is trying to say Johnson has done a good job compared to Sweden. There is no way Sweden are even close by any comparison and they still have a healthy economy.

To suggest Johnson and the UK government have done a good job seems laughable. I really can't see they could have done much worse. No apparent policy, neither Swedens or a proper lockdown, just an unorganised mess. Now I hear they are going to stop incoming flights very late, when many European countries are talking opening up again.

But as said the Nordic countries are similar in the ways population is spread, in health systems and socially, and I think it is more relevant to compare Sweden's increasing immunity approach to these countries than the rest of Europe. On these numbers to date Swedens virus results looks terrible, but hopefully will get better. I see the speed with which other Nordic and European countries are coming out of lockdown, still with ongoing new infections and deaths as frightening.

This track and trace will be a complete waste of money and time (although I believe cummings sister might make a penny or two). How do you force someone to isolate after all.that has happened. Government wont review fines handed out to the public for those caught travelling for child care. So either cummings was right and the government wrong or the government right and cummings wrong. Both cant be true.
