The All Time Championship Table has been revealed, according to worldfootball, and it’s giving fans a real throwback feel. It takes into account when the league was known at Division Two (1892-1992), the Football League First Division between (1992-2004) and the Championship (2004-Present) https://fanbanter.co.uk/the-all-tim...ixCFBjOuu22h-0VXxqpIkryZen1f4nJ1g3J9ZewJfTP2Q
I know it’s changed in the last decade-ish, but being 4th really highlights our ‘always the bridesmaid, never the bride’ status in terms of the top-flight doesn’t it?
Wait, so only Barnsley and Leicester (who, if we do survive, we'll overtake next season) have played more championship games than us?
The ones that surprised me were Barnsley and Bury; I don't think of them as one of life's natural second division teams. Also a bit surprised at Grimsby. A long run either side of the war must have got them where they are. The rest? Yep fair enough. We've probably played each of them a million times in Div 2 over the years.
I feel a new chant coming on. Division Two, Through and through. We're neither significantly better or worse than you.
Got to say, I don't remember MK Dons playing 314 games at this level. Pretty certain they've only played 46.
To me it seems like Barnsley have been constantly bouncing between the top of League 1 and the bottom of the championship my entire life. Weird that they're so good at getting promoted yet can never get above 21st when they do.
It started to annoy me why I don't think of them as a 2nd tier side when they obviously are. They've basically always been in whatever the second tier has been called (with the odd relegation and immediate promotion), except for the 60s and 70s. That was when I was most football obsessed and cared about such things. During those formative years they never played in the old second division and consequently didn't play us much as we spent most of those years in the second division. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Barnsley_F.C._seasons
Syd "Skinner" Normanton - there was a tough one. Michael Parkinson never stopped talking about him. No chance Vinny Jones or Graeme Souness !
Apparently there have only ever been 65 teams in the top flight of English football, seems not many as when Huddersfield went up they were the 49th different PL side. Anyway, according to this, we are 53rd & nowhere near going higher or lower anytime soon! (And not just because we’re not in the PL!) https://www.worldfootball.net/alltime_table/eng-premier-league/
