been watching the fa cup classics fir the last 2 nights. Bias aside.. What is the greatest FA cup game. League game European game Greatest game you been to (which will rule out 80% of this board)
Istanbul is still probably the best match I've watched. I loved that AC team, some amazing players, the game was dramatic and just summaries football for me. Conversely, this most recent CL Final Liverpool vs Spurs was potentially one of the most anti-climatic **** games I've seen.
Can’t be arsed answering all those but; Best FA Cup game I’ve been to; Saints 4 - 0 Tottenham, Jan 2003. St Mary’s wasn’t even full, but that’s the loudest I can remember the place. Might have had something to do with Glen Hoddle jumping ship from Saints to go to Spurs. We got him sacked the following September too; Karma, Glenn, Karma. Worst; Everton 1 - 0 Saints, Highbury 1984. We had a great side that year, 2nd in the league, and the cup should have been ours, but we just couldn’t score in the semi at Highbury, then a late freak Adrian Heath goal sent us home with aching hearts. Everton fans went on the pitch, the Scouse ****s - can’t blame them I suppose. You wouldn’t have been able to do that at many grounds by that point, Highbury was one of the few that didn’t fence the fans in.
Best FA Cup final 1981 Replay with Spurs and Man City. 2 brilliant goals 5 goals in total and both teams leading at different points. But the 1987 Coventry v Spurs final was also a 5 goal classic...**** result though Best fa cup game for non spurs fans might be spurs 3 Man City 4...classic fa cup stuff. A **** Spurs team 3 up at half time and a **** Man City team with only 10 men score 4 second half goals ... horrific for us Best European game Ajax 2 Spurs 3 Spurs 2 nil down at half time and 3 nil down on aggregate but what a second half! Liverpool 4 Barcelona 0 is right up there too as is Istanbul...in fairness Istanbul wins it cos it was the final. Best game I havd been too is too hard to call tbh. Have seen some great come backs by us... spurs 3 Arsenal 3 after we were 3-1 down. Spurs 4 Chelsea 4 after we were 3-1 and 4-3 down. Spurs 4 Villa 4 after we were 4-1 doen with 20 to play. But I would go for Spurs 5 Arsenal 1 in 2008 league cup semi final cos we hadn't beaten them in 8 or 9 years before that.
Best FA Cup game I recall was the replay at White Hart Lane. Spurs 3-4 City. Barton sent off at half time with City 3 down and Jon Macken nicking it in the last minute.
Matthew's cup final, to have a game named after you really meant something. Arsenal beating liverpool in the last minute at Anfield. The Amsterdam version of monopoly.
What is the greatest FA cup game - United’s victory over Arsenal to take them closer to the treble. Or when Wigan beat City in the final. League game - 8-2 vs Goonz. Or when Gerrard slipped. European game - Late in May in 1999, Ole scored a goal in injury time, what a feeling, what a night. Also when Bayern ripped Barcelona apart after their period of dominance. Greatest game you been to. United 7-1 Roma.
Games I've been to. Best: Newcastle 6-1Tottenham (may have been seven...). FA Cup game and Keiron Dyer just destroyed them. Worst: Leicester 0-0 Newcastle. We had an outside chance of the league, Leicester were fighting relegation. As I lived in Leicester I could have handled them winning as I didn't want them to go down. Terrible game, I think I'm right in saying neither side registered a single shot on target all game, I paid double to sit in the Newcastle end and Leicester went down whilst we finished third.
****ing spooky, just watched a re-run of that on the MUFC website (full 90). That was how football should be played, fast passing, players that could actually receive the ball at speed and control it, Ronnie and Giggs at their imperious best taking the piss out of 2 or 3 players at a time. I look at the "great PL teams" of today and think..........Nah
Best FA Cup game I've been to was 1982 Q/F against Shrewsbury at a rammed Filbert St ... not for quality but for drama ... they crocked our keeper and we ended up with 2 different outfield players in goal during the match... we went 2-1 down but came back to win 5-2 and with a hat-trick for our young sub Jim Melrose The 2-0 loss to Spurs in the following semi at Villa park was one of the worst in terms of disappointment as we were never really in it. Best FA Cup final for me Sunderland beating the then mighty Leeds United. European Cup - United beating Bayern for unbelievable drama ... edges it for me because Istanbul was won on penalties. EDIT 82 ... thanks to RCL
He'll likely be on someone's list ... but personally I found the win against Watford at Filbo the round before Shrewsbury in '82 more memorable
