The stadium is already too big. 42k would suit us nicely, even when we get to the Prem. Far better to be sold out every week then have a few thousand empty seats.
Exactly. The place was bouncing every game under Reid at 42k. Sheffield United in the playoffs it was wild.
Agree totally... but, if we were playing that level and brand of football, I reckon we’d get 46k every week! (Add the away fans fir a full house!) we’d not get 52000 like Newcastle do every week mind.....
When we had those two 7th place finishes under Reid we averaged 46,000. A half decent team finishing just above half way (as we did then) in the Premier and we would get those numbers again. Our all time average is something like 34,000, considering we have been mainly ****e for the last 60 years that is amazing. The capacity is exactly right for a club our size. Actually have some success and we would be locking people out every week. I know it seems light years away at the minute but the potential is there.
Another thing to consider is the general trends of people watching more games from home rather than attending matches in any sport. That's something that might become even more normalised now, but was already a trend. There are a number of NFL teams with very large stadiums and a lot of empty seats each week. We would definitely be in that position at the moment and for the foreseeable future. Even if all went well, 50,000+ every week is unrealistic even for some big big clubs. Look at Arsenal and Spurs in the last few years as examples. Tend to agree with @Flash Gordon that in an ideal world 42,000 or so was about right and it felt like getting a ticket wasn't always that easy sometimes. Now... well...
Opening up the stadium and giving out cheap tickets to the young uns to bring them in should be priority number 2 after getting a decent squad to keep up the interest, revenue from match day sales would increase as well as the atmosphere. As much as it pains me, I can see a mass exodus like '92 if and when the mags get taken over and they start splashing the cash on world stars. The outlying areas youth will defect over. We really are in a paradox of ****e at the moment and the future does not look rosy at all. Haway man Donald, do the right thing and pack your bags, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
I think you are being a bit negative there. I would think another few thousand empty new shiny red seats in a closed upper tier extension would look brilliant in league 1 and really be a sign of intent to the opposition and their fans. We would be able to add at least another two or three carriages to the monorail to hammer this home to the away fans as they watch the empty carriages roll into the station. We could even pipe in the sounds of marching footsteps over a PA system to strike fear into them before the match. Showing pictures of huge crowds on large screens outside the stadium would top all of that off*. *Once the current social distancing restrictions are relaxed - in the meantime all of this can be computer animated and streamed to season ticket holders and any interested away fans.
