That sounds very plausible; they had it all mapped out for next week, but punters kept dying inconveniently, and that ****ed that up.

I agree. It was clearly evident last Wednesday that Boris was going to make a big statement on Sunday. This wasn't through me reading any tabloids, it was Boris own words in Parliament, the very words Starmer was rightly questioning.

This gave a confusing message before the bank holiday weekend, I don't really care for those who say not so, I know what I saw.

Since then, there has been some serious back peddling, the problem Boris has now got, he made the announcement loud and clear, so is big mouth has now left him with no room to manouvre and to damage limitate.

I know people suggest the Brits are thick, but the Met Police also made it very clear they were confused to.

Basically in short it's a massive fook up. But hey, plenty of empty beds at the Nightingale to fill up, so that makes it alright <ok>

No ones mentioned this much, but I've really disliked the football league like death counting we have been using since the offset of this pandemic. Counting nations per death, putting them on a list, it just plays into the mentality you know people have. If Italy is top of the list in Europe, you know for a fact Brits, Spanish and French people will say "well, I'm going out, thank God its not as bad here as it is there!"

People saw the initial numbers out of Italy, took them for face value, panicked and cried about it and now tbh most people don't even care anymore. Now, it's happening with America, Trump has become a daily entertainment for most people and they say "well, thank God its not as bad here as it is in America!" Rinse and repeat.

I am disappointed in how the government handled this, I am mostly disappointed in how easily they caved into public pressures on many occasions. They're doing it right now, again, people want to go outside so the Government is saying "well, ok, but be careful!" The initial line was follow the science, that they would do what the science said, but the science said not to close schools... Scotland and Wales then immediately closed schools, it felt like a political decision then and it feels like a political decision right now. It hasn't helped, it was never going to help, governments did it for points and now those same countries are saying it probably just made things worse.

If you're going to shut everything, you need the equal metal to then follow this up with massive police restrictions. We didn't do that, because it would be unpopular... incidentally neither did France, Italy nor Spain. Here, Norwegians didn't stay inside because we don't have sunny days, it's because if I went out they'd identify me by my personal number, realise I was registered as sick and fine me 800-1,000 quid... There was even arrests.

This is a rambling mess, but I am just very disappointed in every single element of my country. I don't think a single thing has worked at all.

Fwiw I think it was a mistake to see how we were doing against the likes of France, Italy or Spain in itself. Rightly or wrongly I've always felt there was a group of countries who were responding very poorly and a group of countries who were responding very well to the crisis (and a group of bullshitters who I never really paid any attention to). I still believe that by highlighting the group who were doing well it would keep in our minds how much of a handle they had on the situation and how far behind we were.

Thinking back to the start of the outbreak here, the government proposed the 4 stages of the response. The first phase "containment" was in name only because the message to the public was just to be careful and report it early if you think you got it whilst at the same time keeping places open. Containment should've meant immediate lockdown. That to me is containment, but that only happened as we moved to "Delay" phase. Maybe they were following the science, I don't know tbh. But we've been playing catch up ever since sadly.

I've tried to figure out the point of Boris' new strategy and have only found two changes
    1. don't "protect the NHS" any more
    2. don't pay for furlough any more
    Is that it?
