Fun virus facts for cool cats!

    - Will take up to ten days to get you government coronavirus test results back, by which time you will either be better or on a ventilator. Yay!
    - the ONS, the only vaguely reliable source of data, reckons that the true daily rate of infection is about 20,000. Yippee!
    - garden centres, churches for private prayer open on Monday, and you can exercise as much as you want! Kerching!!!
    - the magic R number has risen is a fraction below 1. Pow!
    - Bank of England says we are on course for worst recession for 300 years. Record breakers!!
    - men are twice as likely as women to die of/with (who the **** knows!) of the virus in hospital. No men to leave the house ever again! No, men decide against this, it’s just for the old. Deranged!

Excellent. With the possibility of easing restrictions, one would think that we are beating this virus. No vaccine, no antibody tests, track and trace not up and running, daily infections still in their thousands, death rate over half a thousand each day. Yep we are definitely beating this. Speaking as a deeply unreligious person, why can people not just pray at home? You can do all the prayers you like. Easy.

OK. Turkish and DT can you both turn it down several notches.

This is an informative thread, where a lot of information is passed on...
This is not a thread to call each other @@@@s (whatever that word was) and personally threaten each other.

    So lay off please

Speaking as both a totally non religious and (I have discovered) a profoundly non spiritual person, some places of worship (even though I don’t worship in them) do have a certain atmosphere of calm and contemplation and I can understand why those of the religious inclination like to commune with their deity in them, however bewildering the process may be to me. And I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be able to do this, as long as they are socially distant. Though I saw some footage of people getting the communion wafer in an allegedly ‘safe’ way and thought ‘hey they really do trust in God don’t they?’

Okay here is something positive for you all.
Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin. We normally generate this vitamin in sunshine....although supplements are very easily available

It has long been worrying me about the large number of deaths in the BAME community. It has long been worrying me why older and infirm and sick people are so at risk

The answer is vitamin D. It came up on my science thread about a paper that is currently under review about testing Vit D levels in people who were mildly ill with CoVid against those that were seriously ill/died. The levels were much higher in those with mild disease than those who were ill (cause and effect maybe, still to be studied). They suggested that normal levels of vitamin D helped you to fight the disease, low levels made you prone to the more serious effects

Amongst the UK residents, the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups who are most at risk to the virus, are known to have lower levels of vitD, as darker skin produces far less vitamin D than lighter skin. This is true with older, housebound people with chronic illness

So I am out in the sunshine, and vitamin D supplements are on my essential shopping list for next week. This may be wrong, but I cannot see any downside to this info....its not like telling you all to drink disinfectant is it

That’s bad news for the BAME community, but great news for my family as we are all genetically engineered to absorb and produce vitamin d as if we lived in a windowless box, or north of the arctic circle.

At last the Day of the Ginger (or in my case strawberry blonde) is here! Return of the Viking! Fear us if you dare!

My wife was discussing this with me a couple of weeks ago - she's stuck indoors looking after patients, so doesn't get as much sun as me as I work outdoors. One of the doctors had told her about the benefits of VitD against the virus, so she's on the suppliments already.

Wasn't aware that BAME naturally had a VitD deficiency - interesting

I was part of a socially distanced funeral last week, via Zoom. The service took place by the graveside with 10 physical attendees - suitably spaced - and a camera set up to transmit proceedings to those who couldn't be there. Luckily it was a beautiful day.

It's taken a pandemic for you to finally srick two fingers up to those who've mocked you for your gingerness - enjoy your moment in the sun (but make sure you've got the factor 50 on <laugh>)

It’s fascinating and evolutionary. People with a darker skin (ie all of us originally) absorb enough vitamin d from strong sunlight, where their darker skin gives them protection as well. Light skin evolved as humans moved into places with relatively weak sunlight, to help absorb vitamin d more easily, with the downside of sun burn and skin cancer, Hence blond Scandinavians. Darker skinned people don’t have a natural deficiency, they just need more sun.

    I think this is true.

Its an occasionally informative thread (and its good then) but mainly a whats gone or going wrong thread.

Cue any number of replies saying there's plenty of scope for that......

As I am outside for at least a couple of hours every day and am part of the genetically elite super vitamin d producers I wouldn’t think supplements are necessary for myself. But, if you do chose them, like all pills they come with potential (rare I think) side effects.

I’ve been working outdoors for the last 4 weeks, doing absolutely everything but electrics. Beautiful sunshine every day but for 1 day of rain. Got a very brown bald head and a very British T short tan. I’m thinking of changing career, nicest job in years, and I’m immune. Hooray.

I remember an away game at Sheffield United years back now where one of their players had a hair colour probably similar to your own and chants of ‘strawberry blonde? You’re having a laugh’ rang out.
