I was there that game and me mate knew Joe Bolton so we waited for the team coach coming in to see if we could get any free tickets, sure enough Joe obliged. So we spent our money on a bottle of whiskey for the match, more to keep warm more than anything else. We were sitting in the stand overlooking the Thames which was pretty empty so we had about 3 rows to ourselves and just sipped the bottle throughout the match. By the time we scored we were canny pissed but when he picked it up and just banged it home from 30 yards we looked at each other as if "did I just see that properly" before a belated celebration.
Nice one mate. After the match I picked up a pushbike, with no tyres, that had been dumped and managed to ride it. We got to the pub where our 'driver' was waiting for us. I barged in through the swing doors, rode around the bar and out through the other doors. When I walked back in the whole pub stood up and applauded ... ... the lad who was driving us talks about it to this day.
I loved that season but just been looking back at it on Statcat and hadn't realised the number of long journeys we had that season. Chelsea QPR West Ham (twice inc cup replay) Charlton Fulham Orient Watford Luton Bristol Rovers Cardiff Swansea Cambridge Birmingham Shrewsbury Wrexham 16 pretty lengthy trips.
Watching 45 minutes of the two of them was enough for anyone paying attention to clearly see what class players they were.
I thought the same with Toivonen in the first half away to Villa Still, he did go on to play very well in the 2018 World Cup. I agree about your two players, absolutely great to watch them in our shirt.
This thread has now turned into a random chat about players/season when we were as **** as usual. if there’s no takeover or even chat about takeover then it’s now the time to either rename the thread or create another one saying ‘when we weren’t as shyte as we are now’.
If you feel that way why not start one? Doing that, may encourage yourself and others to only make posts, on this thread, that are relevant to the thread title!
These threads have a natural life mate and, as they say, where there's life there's hope. I personally don't think @wearside wanderer II 's thread will be too popular ... ... who wants to talk about us being shyte, there's been plenty of threads like that ready.
I have to keep believing there'll be one, I don't think Donald is up to the job. As long as FPP are still involved, which they are, there's a hope they'll take over the club.
Something I read that I thought was interesting btw - Mel Morris talking about some of his negotiations with Dell/MSD I think that's relevant to us. At the minute FPP have a great deal because if football comes back financially weaker or more... 'volatile', they're able to walk away. They have loads of options, all of them really. Nobody can force them to do anything, even if Donald didn't pay back the loan, they could recover it without ever owning us. But if things come back strong and we progress, they can convert to equity and get more into it. But buying us is an inherently risky position in an industry that is just massively in flux and not guaranteed to come out better than it was. I was reading Warren Buffet's investment firm lost $50bn in Q1, which will be replicated on a smaller scale with MSD, which is probably a huge focus for Phelan and Piatek. Ditto Fuhrman at his PE house. 'These people are more cautious' is a good indicator of why our deal is what it is.
Would end up like that Monty Python sketch about Yorkshiremen saying how hard life was in their day. "Rod Belfitt? You were lucky, me fatha made me watch Didier N'Dong, Jack Rodwell AND Papy Djilobodji" etc.
By coincidence Warren Buffet is a very good friend of Mr Tonna, who bumped into Fuhrman, and is a good friend of mine ... ... and is a very cautious man. Mrs Smug spoke to Mr Tonna yesterday and they were laughing at some of the posts on the MrR&W thread. She sends the best ones and they sit giggling at them ... ... his favourite this week was the photo of Boris Johnson's baby
