Thanks beth but in all honesty I've only met him a handful of times in my life, the last being over 20 years ago. Cant say I even knew him. I feel for my stepfather though as he knows nothing more than I've written.

I see two pet cats have tested positive for Corona Virus in New York.

WTF - they are testing cats, we can't even test our health workers!

The row over the EU scheme is heating up. They are moaning in France as well.

    Andrew Neil
    @afneil

Row rumbles on over why UK did not participate in EU PPE procurement schemes. Reasons given by UK are all over the place. But, perhaps more pertinent, no PPE has yet been procured by this Brussels programme.

My understanding: under EU joint procurement programme, Brussels seeks suppliers + signs “framework contracts” with them. Then up to national governments to make the orders. Brussels docs estimate: PPE to arrive from 2 to 18 weeks of orders placed. For ventilators, 10 to 52 weeks

Sounds like the government made the right choice by not wasting time on this on this venture.

I am waiting for our Super supporter Gove to do that.

I am not sure why, under special measure, he can't just announce that QPR have been promoted as Championship winners and under a job protection scheme got some builders to build them a new state of the art complex on Wormwood Scrubs. Seems sensible to me

I think before any of us comment we should have the full facts. I always thought due to media that we said 'no'. Then Hancock said yesterday that we said 'Yes'. The bloke at the Foreign office changed his story about 'political ideology'. Now I'm hearing (through the press) that the EU can't even supply the stuff? <doh>

It’s on the way. It’s not like we aren’t going to need PPE any more in week or six.

It was initially “because we aren’t in the EU” which is irrelevant to our access then someone realised it may not be hugely popular to have people die due to a political decision so it was changed to us missing an email, which has been proven irrefutably to be nonsense.

Operation Fear doesn't help. Fortunately I know enough now to monitor my own state of health and won't hesitate to get it checked if I do get some new aches or pains. However all of my scans and follow ups have been cancelled for the foreseeable future and it has been difficult for sometime to get a GP appointment even without issues of self-isolation and social distancing having a dramatic impact on the prospects of being seen soon

We don’t seem to have an National Health Service anymore, we have a National COVID19 Service. Just about all of the measures taken to date have been about stopping the NHS collapsing - the NHS the national totem, the voodoo fetish of unity, the thing we all (well all except the ultra free market health is a commodity goons) support - and in fact it has, stealthily, behind the scenes, with no fanfare - collapsed, because unless you have COVID19 we don’t seem to have a way to get treated, unless it’s via A&E and due to Operation Fear even the sickest don’t want to go down that route. Brilliant demand control measures!

And according to Whitty it will be like this for at least another calendar year, as he says there is only a very small chance that there will be a vaccine or good treatments within this time, so we will have to keep loads of capacity for COVID19 patients especially in intensive care. Although Sarah Gilbert says she has an 80% chance of getting a vaccine through trials by September, and I know for a fact that multiple different potential treatments are being trialled as we speak.

No authoritative sources of information available, all comment is speculation or anecdote.

Impressively restrained scam.. You weren't promised billions of pounds if only you would give your bank details so that the payment could be made. Also you were not told to keep it quiet because if the chinese authorities ever found out your correspondent could be in big trouble.

Yes and no, sorry to be so non binary.
Just interested to understand certain psyche, my personal opinion is that if lockdowns and social distancing measures (however effective) were not conducted, that this would likely have overrun close to the Armageddon that worse case scenarios were predicting.
Easier for me to see the complete sense of lockdown in the safety and comfort of my over privileged life - I have the self awareness of that at least.

On the Swedish model? Time will tell, the natives are restless, the Scandinavians have roughly same situation in terms of sparsity of people :

Sweden - 2021 deaths and not yet plateaued - many reports of additional deaths not included due to heart attacks at home etc.
Denmark - 394 - 14 days of continuous lower numbers
Norway - 189 - virtually nothing for past weeks

Denmark and Norway could hardly be classed as a lockdown but the measures that were taken were fully described.
Denmark and Norway are well on the way through phased reopening.
