Link to Professor Sarah Gilbert on Marr discussing when vaccine trials will begin and also the possibility of reinfection. Today Matt Hancock announced a £20 million investment. I urge you to watch this Kaito, as with all the negativity of how the Government are handling the situation, I felt quite positive after listening to what Prof. Gilbert had to say.

I'm pretty sure she's been saying that for a couple of weeks.

I hope it's true and I'm sure it's got nothing to do with funding for their department.

In truth I’m beginning to think we have far too many perfectionists on this site. I’m no Boris lover but for goodness sake Boris only relates what he is told. To accuse him of lying all the time just doesn’t make sense to me. If he repeats something he has been told, or mentions something that is wishful thinking he is accused of lying if it doesn’t actually happen.
Not saying they haven’t been slow to react at times, or that things he wanted to do Haven’t taken place yet. Surely that does not make him a liar or cheat. Sometimes I think your bias is a little over whelming.
Although I can except you thinking another party can or would have done a better job than the Tories.

Tom,it never went away, for the last six to twelve months the site has got worse.
Dont understand why because there is a good politics thread which nobody objects to, on this thread it is clear that politics are not only allowed but positively encouraged.

I wonder what the death rate is amongst medical staff in other European countries.

Come on guys don't be so naïve. If I break my arm and my treatment is mismanaged then it is the medical team and the NHS who are responsible.

This is a national pandemic being managed by the government. If it goes wrong because of political decisions then politicians have to be held to account. The appalling mismanagement of this crisis lays entirely at this inept governments door.

This is a huge event that has only been considered in theory before. All round the world people are learning as they go along. No one in the government is doing anything out of malice. Things will be right and things will be wrong. Can you imagine how much work is going on behind the scenes...and with the same number of ministers and civil servants as before. Like PPE, the government work force couldn’t be magicked out of thin air. Does anyone really think that Corbyn could have managed any better...likely to have worse because of inexperience. Oh, if only this crisis was being managed by the media with the gift of hindsight and the ability to turn back the clock. Have to look forward, not back. That’s been on my chest for some time...beats yelling f*** off at the tv.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, however the UK didn't use the time in advance to mobilise and come up with a sensible plan.

Unfortunately, it is a symptom of modern politics that MPs are great talkers but not doers. Unfortunately, doers who are not articulate can't make it in modern politics and management.

It is good Parliament is opening again as listening to evidence and making collective and accountable decisions through scrutiny and working together is the way forward.

As usual Fran, you are the voice of reason.

I have also said before that this is unprecedented, so the government (any government of any political direction) will get shedloads wrong and appear to constantly change direction.

However, what this shows to me is that firstly they didn't take it seriously and secondly, they are no good in a crisis as unfortunately we have a bumbling idiot in power. If I was the bumbling idiot in power I would surround myself with good people to make me look good.

Trump on the other hand is malicious and all about re-election and deflecting all blame off him.

*I agree that I don't think Corbin would have done any better, and as weird as it sounds I don't think Labour would have gone so far to help the people that the Tories have appeared to do. I say appear as I can't see how we can get back to 'normal' without more unemployment and more austerity. I still though cannot believe a Tory government has given away so much money to try to keep the economy going. Normally they work on the survival of the fittest rule rather than lets help these ordinary people out.

Yep I got all political there, like ex-smokers, ex-tories are the worst :)

I think Corbyn would have done better, simply because for the last 2-3 years the NHS would have been properly funded, probably with more nurses training following the re-introduction of the real bursary, plus we would have had a Social Care Plan in place that could have minimised the deaths that are occurring in care homes.
The running down of the NHS stockpiles whilst ignoring the Cygnus report warning that we wouldn’t be able to cope with a pandemic is just neglect on a major scale and something that was predicted- no need for hindsight.
A properly maintained stockpile at a level deemed suitable to meet the needs of a pandemic, would have bought the government time to source more products in a more timely manner, rather than see us in the mess we now find ourselves.
And the stories from companies producing PPE who cannot get the government to take it from them are growing by the hour.
