I hear our Mayor Sadiq Khan now wants all Londoners to be made to wear face masks when they leave their homes.

I can see the advantage of wearing them on the buses and tubes, where passengers cannot really remain 2 metres apart.
But I don't see how enough masks can be made available for millions of Londoners.
We aren't talking about one mask per person (like one bullet per rifle for the Home Guard).
Every single man, woman and child would need a pack of these things. 20 or more just to last a fortnight.

Also people will have to be educated in their safe use.
Not wearing a mask properly, and taking a mask off in a careless manner, can have a higher risk of infection than not wearing one at all.
Also, used masks have great potential for infection. They must be disposed of safely.

Too many discarded masks and gloves are already littering the streets in London. Why should road sweepers have to pick them up without very robust protection themselves? Imagine the number of nasty, dirty old masks and gloves on our streets, multiplied by a thousand or more.

I know masks are the done thing in many East Asian countries.
But keeping the streets free of litter is also the done thing in those Countries.
Every citizen takes that very seriously. Folks out there would never just chuck their PPE away in the streets.
Compared to them, we in the UK are filthy litter bugs.

@Smudger603 used to wear a mask before this pandemic. It stopped him from frightening children.

We probably all saw some footage of groups of people 'clapping for carers' yesterday.
Some of the video showed hundreds of people on Westminster Bridge, many definitely not standing 2 metres apart.

Now I hear some Met Police to knob (Dick) is in trouble for allowing this.
    Fair enough.
Looking at the footage again, the Westminster Bridge clap was an organised big crowd event which sends exactly the wrong message to people cooped up at home.
It should not be allowed to happen again.

Westminster Bridge should not attract a huge crowd every Thursday evening.
It is in serious danger of becoming a regular outdoor party venue. You'll get people selling food from stalls there next.
Muppets will begin travelling miles just to be there, such is their compulsion to 'join in' and be part of something which is getting so much TV coverage.

But what about the TV camera crews and news producers who organise and encourage these 'feel good' events for TV.

Do we really need these 'showbiz' mass scenes to report the 'Clap for carers'?
No. They certainly are not essential.
The broadcasters should stop producing them.
Shots of normal folk clapping from their front porches and windows is perfectly adequate.

I am greatly disturbed by this new directive by Public Health England asking hospital staff to re-use some PPE as a last resort.

This puts our courageous doctors and nurses in an impossible position.
Their Union says they should refuse to work if they are not going to be properly protected.
But how can they be asked to stand by and watch patients die.

Yet asking them to work without enough PPE is tantamount to asking them to contract the virus themselves by choice, and maybe die from it.
To knowingly sacrifice their lives, possibly to cover for blunders by bureaucrats.
How can they be expected to do this, when they have families who are so precious to them.

I imagine many NHS staff will carry on working even without enough PPE, or with contaminated PPE.
These men and women are heroes. Their bravery cannot be summed up in words.

If this directive is enforced, I don't want to see some bloke in a suit standing behind a lectern offering repeated wittering thanks as a way of avoiding answering questions.
The Government must be straight with us.
No more obfuscation. Only plain talk about what is being done to FIX THIS PROBLEM.

Once this crisis is over, there must be a full independent investigation into this PPE situation.
An investigation with such powers that nobody can avoid it or refuse to cooperate.
And if that investigation discovers that NHS workers have died because of bungling and/or complacency with the ordering or distribution of PPE, the people responsible must be prosecuted and punished.
And that includes the most senior politicians and civil servants if they are guilty.

Its because at the end of the day the government know these doctors and nurses would work with no ppe if it came to it.
Personally i think its one thing fighting for your country , but doing it without the right equipment is something else.
Should of started with the bus drivers a couple of weeks ago walking out.
Im 45 years old and would like to think id put my life on the line for queen and country.
Not without the right equipment though.
These doctors and nurses are war heroes.

Dork of the day ... 19th April

    ASDA

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52343623

Has cancelled some of its clothing orders with suppliers, and says it will not pay the full value of those orders.
This is despite ASDA raking in bumper cash from the panic buying of food back in March.

How it must rankle their greedy executives that Social Distancing rules have forced them to limit the number of customers in their stores at any one time, so putting a stop to the baked beans & bog roll buying frenzy.

Come on ASDA - you can afford to pay those suppliers even if you're going to end up with slow moving stock of clothes.
By the middle of summer some of the restrictions will be lifted, and some people will be back to work.
Clothing sales will pick up gradually.
Don't just hang your suppliers out to dry, at the same time as telling shoppers how committed you are to feeding them during this crisis.

I find Asda stores to be soulless grief-holes at the best of times.

Their disgraceful behaviour surprises me not a jot.

Hindsight is a damned annoying thing.

But even at the time, I remember thinking that letting the Cheltenham Festival go ahead with 60,000 crowds every day (from all over the country) was not a good idea. And 3,000 fans flying in from Madrid for a European match at a packed Anfield on March 11th was a major mistake.

There can be no doubt whatsoever that those two events hugely helped to spread Coronavirus. Liverpool is a big infection hot-spot a long way from London.

For the people on TV this afternoon to call these links a "hypothesis" is not very honest.

I hear the Bavarians have just decided to cancel this years' October Beer Festival.

    A sensible decision.
I know it will be a huge economic blow for the region and for the esteem of Germany.
But I'm glad to see the Germans have not let their relative success so far in combating the Coronavirus go to their heads.

Germany has the highest population in Western Europe, and many large cities.
If they get over-confident and sloppy, thousands of lives could be lost.

This is an unpleasant story, but with a question I cannot help wondering about...

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-52396748

Assaulting or abusing funeral staff is obviously unacceptable.
Even when emotions are running very high it cannot be excused.

But why has Birmingham City Council restricted the number of mourners to 6, when the Government guidelines say 10 is acceptable?
The Councillors seem to think they know better than the guidance everybody else is OK with.
And it isn't the Councillors who have to face the anger of grieving families, divided by this arbitrary decision.

Perhaps if 10 mourners were allowed at Birmingham funerals, and people did not think they were having more unnecessary pain inflicted on them by some pen-pushing local politicians on a whim, they would not be so inclined to lose their tempers with funeral staff.

I would go so far as to say funeral workers should not have to enforce this petty rule.
    The National guidance should apply.

I heard on the news today that the SAGE committee (the scientists who are guiding the Government regarding Coronavirus rules)
is allowing Dominic Cummings to watch its video meetings as they happen.

Dominic Cummings has had a varied career and he could be regarded as an academic in some fields.
But is he a scientist with knowledge of viral pandemics?
    No.

He is the chief advisor to Boris Johnson. A prime political mover.
He has NO business listening in on SAGE meetings, allowing him to add a pro-Conservative political dimension to information given to the Government by SAGE.

We do not have a Government of National Unity.
The credibility of our current Conservative Government
must not be undermined by perceptions that it is abusing procedures to gain political advantage during this crisis.

Lidl in Bromley High Street f***** it up today.

Within 5-7 minutes around 15 people were allowed in, during this time considerably less exited<doh>.

As a result social distancing went flying out the window. I did not have the time to take it up with staff, this I'll do on my next visit.
