I had the privilege of seeing him play twice but never in a Bristol City shirt. One of the true greats of the game and my thoughts are with his family today.
As always the BBC piss me off. If it's not their left wing bias, their anti Brexit stance, it's now showing Norm as just a clogger. For us that saw him play the 'bite your legs' stuff was way overblown. He was brilliant in the air, a fantastic tackler and a great passer of the ball. However, for me, it was his leadership and organising a defence that stood out most.
First time I saw him play against us was at Ashton Gate, was a very strange feeling. RIP to a great footballer and true gent.
Yes thanks for the reminder 3-2. You won at ER later in the season 2-0, 2 shots 2 goals, I remember coming out of the ground really angry. Walked on to ER and saw what can only be described as half man - half grizzly bear walking down the middle of the road with his City scarf on display for all to see.
Indeed. Grizzly Adams on steroids. Some City fan from around that time must remember him, he was HUGE.
I managed a team called Embeltonians named after a local school in the mead, Norman was invited to come and take us for training one evening, and low and behold the great man turned up, after he came back to our local pub The Treble Chance for a pint much to the amazement of the locals, Norman was a true gentleman and I for one was truly privileged to have met him, RIP Norman don't bite to many legs up there.
Not quite as good as our 0-1 (Donny Gillies) 5th round FA Cup win at ER in '74 during the 3 day week, against the Leeds side that had every famous name imaginable playing for them as current league champions including good old Norman, after a 1-1 draw down here when we were in the old 2nd Division. A really scary exit from the stadium too - lots of unhappy home fans understandably. The replay was in front of 47,000 at Leeds and there were 38,000 here for the original tie I believe !
