Apparently the WHO funding was a pittance anyway. I suppose with tiny hands it us inevitable that you punch below your weight.
The USA was the largest individual funder of the WHO, providing about $300 million per annum. Interestingly, the second largest funder is the Bill Gates Foundation, and Bill was quick to condemn Trump’s move, saying it was “as dangerous as it sounds”.
Trump was not right to do it, but the WHO needs more accountability. Hopefully something good comes of this.
February the 10th, there is a video of Trump praising both China and the WHO. The guy has literally no shame. Just says anything to make himself seem better, and everyone else seem worse. Zero accountability, zero care for truth, logic or integrity. Its fascinating to watch
$400 million a year apparently. The US is by far the biggest contributor, although it seems they were $200 million behind with their payments.
The latest wheeze, you couldn't make it up, but it's on the BBC website. Romanian crop pickers being flown into Stansted. So much for cheap foreign workers being stopped from undercutting British workers. The first whiff of grapeshot from Farmer Giles and this lot are running like frightened rabbits. Brexit , Schmexit!
The link: BBC News - Eastern Europeans to be flown in to pick fruit and veg https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52293061
That says more about our people's unwillingness to work. Like picking crops is beneath some, who would prefer to do nothing. So sad. Once this is over, the government should have a massive overhaul of people abusing job seekers allowance & community service orders from criminals. Its about time some people give something back. I'd also scrap a fine for anyone caught fly tipping and give them an automatic 500 hours of..............removing fly tip waste. Lets get harsh.
You need to be careful. Give farmers free labour and they will gorge on it forever. New Range Rovers all round chaps plus a few quid to Tory funds. The system is rigged and it's crooked. And don't forget if you are Romanian an hour picking crops will pay your rent for a week. Here you'll need to work half a week.
I get a veggie box delivered weekly from Riverford Farms - all seasonal, organic produce. It comes with a newsletter. In this week's newsletter, the CEO states they have no shortage of people from the UK willing to work on their client farms. This might have something to do with the fact they pay all their suppliers, and all their employees, fairly.
The problem is that the massive supermarket chains treat the farmers like ****. It's a race to the bottom with the prices they pay for produce, which is in turn passed to the workers.
Yeah, that's all part of the aims of Riverford Farms, and one of the reasons I and many others signed up with them. You pay a little bit more for your veg, but aside from being good quality seasonal produce, you know you are buying from a business that is committed not only to environmental sustainability, but also to ensuring a fair deal for small independent farmers and suppliers. Supermarkets really are the villains in the whole food production scandal.
That's really good- will have to do an order. But it also makes me think that yet again, it's good people stepping up to do their bit - instead of fixing the broken system. A bit like Captain Tom and the NHS. It shouldn't be needed
But that's one of the ways we can change the world; good people committed to doing good things, and ordinary people supporting them. We as customers in the consumer society have - to some extent, and depending on budget - the power to choose which businesses we give our custom too. As for charities, fundraising for the NHS, foodbanks, all that, well I agree that shouldn't have to happen. But it does, so let's thank the people, like that old soldier, who make good things happen.
I absolutely agree, but consider the effect on a party’s votes when they pledge to raise income tax by 1p in the £ in order to fund the NHS properly. Most of the people who sent money to Captain Tom won’t vote for that on principle, even though the tax would probably cost most of them less than their donation.
