Excuse my ignorance but can anyone tell me how the salute is done correctly?See many people with the shirt in these parts.Better than a thumbs up and`nice shirt lad`
If you Google Leeds United salute, it will re-direct you to the Leeds offical site who did an article on it in June (25th) 2009. Various theories are banded about about when it actually started & makes interesting reading as various fans recollect their memories. The most interesting story being from a Norwegian fan who was taught the salute by his Grandfather & used it at his first game at Elland Road when he was about 9 or 10 yrs old, (that would be in the late 60's early 70's). Apparently it was originally done with the LEFT arm, as post World War II, it wasn't done with the right arm as it would have resembled a Nazi salute & this guys Grandfather had fought them in the war as had numerous other fans. I personally use the left arm for this reason as respect for the blokes who fought Hitler & co. (plus I am left handed) but can see why the right arm is used as it punches the badge. Someone claimed Glyn Snodin used it first, but Snods was the first Leeds player I saw punch an opposition player (and deck him!!) rather than punching the badge!
The right arm out, palm downwards would be the DeCanio salute. But he says he's a fascist, not a Nazi, so that's alright then.....
