Should a vaccine be available in months rather than over a year, it should be given first to our front line medical & care staff, then other essential workers.
    IF it is completely safe.
I imagine a vaccine might physically exist in 4 or 5 months, but it will take time to test it properly.

We can't use our NHS workers as guinea pigs, on top of everything else they are being asked to do.
It would be totally unacceptable for large numbers of them to suffer some kind of serious unexpected side-effect a year or two down the line.

Small word of caution for people pinning hopes on vaccines.
They have spent billions upon billions and years and years trying to find vaccines for other viruses like HIV, Malaria, Ebola, even the common cold without success.

But we do have Flu vaccines every year, tailored to the current strain.

On a global scale Pandemics are going to be a bigger threat than War in future.
What we learn from this one will be put to good use to fight future ones much more effectively.

... while we in the UK are getting ready to tuck into American beef dripping with growth hormone, and Kentucky fried chlorinated chicken.

    Yum yum.

Is there any chance that Journos can stop asking why the Government doesn't recommend everybody wears a mask?

This question has been answered hundreds of times and it's always the same answer.

The UK Government is following WHO (World Health Organisation) guidelines.
WHO says masks are not necessary for everybody.
If the WHO advice changes, the Government will change its advice.

Personally I won't be wearing one until it becomes a lockdown rule to wear one.
How many millions of masks will be needed so everybody has some?
And where will we get them from?

And we should not be talking about cheap dust masks that some cyclists wear to avoid breathing in large diesel particles.
Masks that will stop the virus are more expensive and difficult to make than that.

The masks would probably come from China, along with the rest of the cheap crap they produce and send our way.

I know it's almost impossible to avoid Chinese goods nowadays, but I'm going to do my very best to steer well clear of their offerings - at least until they change their ways on animal and human rights.

    Fair comment ponders.

    Something to remember about the virus (from a risk point of view);
It does not survive on surfaces for more than 72 hours. And that's on shiny hard surfaces like metal, plastic or glass.
On softer surfaces (wood, card, fabrics) it loses its ability to infect much more quickly.

So anything being imported from China won't be dangerous to handle as long as it has been in transit for longer than 3 days. Even air freight goods will probably be untouched for longer than that (allowing for the time it takes them to pass through customs, then be distributed etc).

However, I agree that a great deal of their stuff is crap.
Sadly, the rest of the world buys it because it is cheap.
Nobody holds a gun to our heads and forces us to import everything from China.

Dork of the Day ... 13th April

    Eamonn Holmes <steam>

    He's flipped his lid.
Holmes has apparently joined the Church of David Icke, and now believes that the 5G mobile phone network causes Coronavirus <doh>

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-52270736

Holmes is an experienced TV presenter.
You would think he'd need just a smidge of common sense and an IQ over 70 to hold down a job like that.
    But no!
    He's an absolute moron.

And I hear some branches of McDonald's restaurants in China banned African people from entering the store.

    Apparently because (wait for it)...
There is a widespread belief in China that Africans are spreading the Coronavirus <doh>

How supremely ignorant and ironic is that.
The bloody disease started in CHINA, not Africa. What is the matter with these people?

Surely bulk disposal of household rubbish & old furniture is not essential work.

That should make it easier for the Police to stop fly-tippers.
Anybody driving around in a long wheelbase van should not mind being stopped and checked for possible fly-tipping. Especially if they are driving late in the evening or early in the morning.

Fly-tipping has always been a despicable anti-social blight.
For these scumbags to be profiting during the Coronavirus crisis is doubly maddening.
Anybody caught fly-tipping should have their vehicle seized immediately, and be given a community sentence when convicted - a minimum of 1 year unpaid work clearing up fly-tipped rubbish.

    And them too.
I try not to be too judgmental about bin men.
They can be less than charming sometimes, but they do a pretty awful job day-in, day-out.
They are key workers right now. So good luck to them <ok>

I'd like to nominate Dork of the Day to Donsld Trump. Removing funding from the WHO in the middle of a pandemic, presumably to take the focus of his own bizarre actions, is beyond belief.
It's a shame as there were a couple of news items about nursing staff being asked to 'go and live elsewhere' by their neighbours, and in one case a nurse having her car trashed. Pond life of the highest order and on another day, deserving to be shamed.

Donald Trump's behaviour now would make Caligula blush.

He thinks he has "Total power" to tell the US States when to lift their lockdowns, and he has picked the WHO as his scapegoat to cover his own mishandling the virus crisis in America.

His next move will be to withdraw the United States from the UN. He needs to be certified, then popped away in a rubber room somewhere.

Some people don't want nurses living next door to them, and have actually told them that?
I had not heard that story before.

I've heard of folks in remote rural areas abusing NHS workers who have come into their communities on essential business.
But not people so paranoid about catching COVID19 that they want to drive away their neighbours because they are nurses.

What will we start doing next, burning people at the stake for Witchcraft?
Attacking mobile phone masts is only a few steps away from that level of ignorant hysteria.
