It was but apparently it’s not that popular with the electorate.

Delays in support payments are frustrating but this is a MASSIVE admin exercise

Govt will need more resource which needs to be trained, provided with IT equipment etc etc

This isn't just push a button and the cash appears!

Necessary financial controls need to be in place to ensure that the right amounts are paid at the right time to the right people

I for one wouldn't want to be responsible for setting this up and I'm a pretty methodical accountant who's project managed many a large system implementation, corporate acquisition etc

Remember also that while the politicians set broad policy it is the Civil Service and similar bodies that have to implement

I understand that but it doesn't actually help people. What finglas describes helps people straight away not 3 months after they have ran out of money.

Some I know have laid people off due to not having the money to pay them. That relief has not even started yet! Self employed only have another 8 or 9 weeks to survive off absolutely nothing!

There is a push button in Ireland and the USA though, cash to individuals. How come they can do it so quickly?

Government policy, even if it is the right policy for the immediate health challenges, has destroyed the livelihoods of millions of people and probably put hundreds of thousands of companies out of business. If the major concern of the government is to ensure that the people they have decided to sacrifice do not then commit some kind of fraud, that’s their call. Not sure their suspicions of the electorate are good politics, but there you go. Personally I feel the Irish accountant free approach seems to be a lot more humane.

The tricky sector is the self employed

I'm not sure the govt has got that quite right but again hugely complicated and open to abuse

No self interest for me - I'm not entitled to anything under any scheme announced to date

I'm not defending the schemes themselves...merely pointing out the complexities which seem to have passed many members of the wider population by

That's why I asked the question earlier in the thread. Are any of these schemes actually up and running yet? Why do we lag behind everyone? Why do we just keep repeating the same daily ****e. If they truly want to stop the spread of this disease then pay people now not to go out and work. Stop people now from doing what they like when they ****ing like. Lockdown properly ffs

We furloughed people late March and paid them as normal for March. We don't need to pay them again until April so I wouldn't expect it to be up and running till the end of this month.
