I'm going to post a man's tale of having the virus. He posted it on Twitter, but I'll copy and paste it on here as sometimes the Tweets duplicate and can make for confusing reading.

His name is Shiraz Maher and he's a director and lecturer on war studies at Kings College London. This was posted on Friday, March 27th.

I've been debating about whether to 'go public' on having coronavirus - which I kind of did inadvertently this morning. So, now I may as well share my experience(s) with you in order to help those who are worried about it or who are thinking they might have it. Here goes... 1/

I was taking this thing pretty seriously from an early stage because of advice from my good friend
    @amhitchens
, who rightly identified the coming crisis. So I put my house in lockdown, I closed
    @ICSR_Centre
early, and I started taking precautions 2/

But you need to be constantly vigilant with coronavirus. All it takes is one careless moment, one unthinking touch of your face, accidentally touching a contaminated surface once and suddenly, boom, you've got it. 3/

I'm 38 and have no underlying health conditions. I figured if I got it, I'd shake it. Here's how things have played out. Firstly, it's not the flu. Whoever originally said that, did everyone a great disservice. This thing is not the flu. It's a nasty, horrible, illness. 4/

I started having symptoms about two weeks ago. The fever was mild and went very quickly. Is it Covid-19? Who knows, but I've shaken it quickly. Great. Then my lungs started packing up and my chest got very tight. This happened around 15-16 March. 5/

The cough was dry and unlike anything I've ever had before. It was much more extreme and pronounced than a dry cough you might have during a bout of the flu. It feels like there's something deeply lodged within your lungs, that they're (violently) trying to eject. 6/

Of course, there's nothing to actually eject. The resulting cough is dusty, dry and painful. Much more scary is that you're unsure of when you'll stop coughing. You have no control over it. There were times I was worried I'd start vomiting because the coughing was so severe 7/

When you finally stop, it's a relief - but now you're in a new phase altogether. You're fighting to draw air into your lungs but your chest is tight and, frankly, your lungs are in distress. They're not functioning the way they should. 8/

Your head is also pounding because of the violent coughing. I suffered terrible headaches after these coughing fits. The evening of Wednesday 18th was the worst day for me. I fought for breath for about 3-4 hours. It was horrific. 9/

I recorded my symptoms and sent it to doctors (my friends). "Classic Covid" came the reply. I kept monitoring it and, frankly, staying awake was a struggle. I went to bed. My breathing remained severely impaired for another 2 days, but I was managing it all from home. 10/

By Friday, I thought I'd got through the worst of it and things were looking good. Coronavirus is particularly cruel. Recovery is not linear. On Saturday night I started to feel distinctly unwell again. I decided to take my blood pressure because I have a home monitor... 11/

Anything over 180/120 is classified as 'hypertensive crisis' (basically, heart attack/stroke territory). Without revealing what mine was, lets just say I was well, well in excess of this (again, I don't have an underlying issue). This was easily the most terrifying moment. 12/

I called my doctor friends and told them. "Time to call 999" they said - so I did. It took more than 15 minutes to speak with a representative; that's how overwhelmed the emergency services are. I told them my BP and that I have coronavirus. 13/

Ultimately they decided they couldn't respond to my call. I am not criticising the London ambulance service. They are doing superb work under incredible, unprecedented circumstances. I'm telling you this part of the story to underscore two things... 14/

The first is that you should only call them in an absolute emergency. It's not a diagnostic service. The more unnecessary calls, the longer the delay in them answering becomes. Secondly, be prepared to take decisive action for yourself because they might not be able to help 15/

So I called my doctor friends again and started to take actions to lower my blood pressure naturally, at home. I spent the next 48 hours in bed and, only after this time, did my blood pressure return to anything vaguely resembling 'normal' (it was still high, but acceptable). 16/

Now we're into the start of this week. Symptoms have slowly evolved into a less severe cough and my chest being less tight (although these get worse in the evenings). But I have lots of new symptoms: crazy abdominal pains and headaches. The lethargy has persisted throughout. 17/

Today we're approaching the end of 2+ weeks since I first developed symptoms and about 11-12 days since they became particularly acute. For the first time, I feel like I'm starting to beat it but I'm nowhere near feeling 100%. 18/

Coronavirus appears to have a completely different trajectory in different people. I can't spot a pattern. Although I'm only speaking publicly about it now, I've been whatsapping with lots of friends/colleagues who've also had it. 19/

Some are shaking it off relatively easily. Others are suffering very badly. The most difficult part of this is the extent to which it takes hold within your lungs. There's just no way to tell what will happen at the start. You need to watch this symptom if it develops. 20/

So that's my coronavirus story. It's a completely mad, crazy illness. It had made me feel more intensely ill than I've ever been in my life. On the Wednesday & Saturday of last week, I was genuinely fearful of what could happen if those symptoms continued to escalate. 21/

I didn't want to tweet about my experience until I was more comfortable in my own assessment that I'm through the worst of it. And I'm sharing this with you now so that you can really think about the way this thing is hitting people. 22/

Do you really need to go out right now? Is social distancing really that hard? Is it too much of an effort to wash your hands repeatedly, and to wash them properly, with soap? 23/

I've lost several days of my life to this illness. Many, many other people will lose their lives to it. This virus continues to spread everywhere and you - literally, you - can help stop it with the most basic of efforts. Wash your hands. Stay at home. Do it now. /ENDS

There's also a follow-up thread where he answers people's questions. I can post it on here if anyone's interested.

    Follow up questions answered here:

I'm pleased my tweets about my experience of coronavirus are helping inform people about the seriousness of what's transpiring. There's been a tidal wave of follow up questions which I've lumped together into the twelve below - I'll answer these now 1/

As this thread it still getting a lot of attention. If you found it useful, consider making a donation to these guys. I’m not affiliated with them, but we all need to support and help the NHS however we can. This is a way to help it’s workers directly:

Before I start, remember, I am *NOT* a doctor. I'm just an ordinary person who's sharing his experiences, hopefully to help others. When it comes to your own health, take the advice of trained, trusted, reliable professionals. 2/

Was I formally tested? No. Very few people can access formal tests (although I did ask for one, I was told no). That said, I consulted three different doctors by phone/whatsapp/video several times during the most acute phases of this. All said it's coronavirus. 3/

How did I get it? No idea, and it's not helpful to speculate. 4/

Did I get the flu shot this season? Yes. I lecture at a major university with lots of students so I get the shot every year. Despite that, I got the flu in December. 5/

How did I lower blood pressure naturally? I got into bed, I put comedies on Netflix, I drank water constantly (but not in bulk), and I spoke to my partner
    @jasmineelgamal
over Facetime for several hours, drifting in/out of sleep at times (whilst leaving the call on). 6/

Having your loved ones around is crucial and letting them support you is vital. In our case we're currently trapped in different countries but, well, that's what technology is there for. We've spoken everyday during this for many, many hours. We're apart but not alone. 7/

The other thing a doctor advised me was to lie on my stomach. This is known as 'proning' or the 'prone position.' Apparently it helps with getting oxygen into the blood. (Remember, I'm *NOT* a medical professional. Consult people and sources you trust on this) 8/

Anyway, the advice was not to lie on my back (which felt more natural). I spent a few days sleeping on my stomach. It helped me. (Again, seek your own medical advice if you experience a hypertensive crisis). 9/

What's my blood group? I don't know, but people are asking this because there's a theory that coronavirus is hitting people in blood group "A" harder than others. I have no idea about the science behind this. As with so much about coronavirus, we don't really know much 10/

    Do I have asthma/an inhaler? No 11/

Did anything help the cough? No. This was worrying and depressing. When the coughing fits come, there's nothing you can do. Someone replying to my thread described it as having "shards of glass in your lungs." That's an accurate description. 12/

Am I smoker? No. But I did smoke in my youth. I did a PhD after all, and you don't get through that without smoking!! 13/

Are my lungs permanently damaged? Some doctors have said coronavirus causes permanent damage. To be honest, I just don't know and, at the moment, my lungs are far from properly healed. I still have the cough and occasional bouts of tightness. 14/

When all this is over I suppose an x-ray will reveal if there's been damage. For now, the hospitals are rightly only treating those who are fighting for their lives. The rest of us can wait. 15/

Do I still have symptoms? Yup. As I said, this thing is particularly cruel because the recovery is not linear. I usually experience two good days and then it returns. Today is another 'day 3' for me and I don't feel great. It's usually worse in the evenings. 16/

How did you communicate with the doctor? I communicated with doctors I knew over whatsapp and by calls. I also spoke to my GP by phone (remember, don't go out!) who has been brilliant. She's called a few times to check on my BP. 17/

The 111 service (in the UK) is pretty overwhelmed and although I tried to call them once, I gave up after being on hold for about 40 minutes. I called the GP the following morning and requested a phone consultation, which I got. 18/

They originally told me all coronavirus cases need to go through 111, but I was politely insistent that I really just wanted to speak with my GP and that I was concerned about my BP. The receptionist was amenable and the call with the GP helped reassure me. 19/

Did I take any medication? I only took paracetamol. Coronavirus is something entirely new and we don't know enough about it. I decided that if I was at home and self medicating, this was not the time to introduce new/unknown stuff to my body. 20/

Drink water like you've only just discovered it. Take paracetamol. Also, I was advised to eat small meals rather than big ones. Big meals take energy to digest and you need that energy to fight the virus. Also, sleep, sleep, sleep. Let your immune system do its thing. 21/

A couple of final points from me. (1) As I did not go to the hospital or use a ventilator, my case is classified as 'mild.' Remember that when you hear that most people will experience only mild symptoms. 22/

    (2) There's a lot of real (and dangerous) rubbish out there about what you should/shouldn't do. Consult reputable medical sources and reputable public health bodies/officials. You have to take control of your health at this time. Be smart about it. 23/

Aside from that, thank you to every single person who has sent me kind wishes. It's been overwhelming and very much appreciated. And thank you to the staff of the NHS, who are a beacon to the world. /ENDS

seeing this woman felt she was being unfairly treated, i started to record on my phone. i’m a journalist, and having witnessed my share of incidents that later lead to isssues, decided i could safely briefly stand from a distance to record while explaining to officers my job 2/

initially the two officers understood, and while i wouldn’t say they were pleased, could see why i was doing it. one asked me to give my opinion on the situation. after less than 60seconds(of what i witnessed) this woman was escorted forcefully 20meters to 2TSG vans + cars 3/

i followed behind - from a large distance - still filming. i was quickly surrounded - much closer than 2 meters, by 5 male officers. they stopped me being able to keep a safe distance. i explained calmly that i’m a journalist and was documenting an incident while walking 4/

sergeant gary brown (3058U) - still aggressively - told me i was “not authorised to go around videoing” before shouting “go home” loudly over me, in my face, multiple times. again, right up close. i had asked him and his colleagues to keep their distance from me. 5/

he then threatened to fine me. given he and others refused to keep their distance i stepped back even further and headed away. i paused to turn back, still filming. three officers ran after me (closer than 2m, again)- another on tannoy yelling - and threatened to fine me again 6/

this is deeply concerning and needs urgent action. i was following governemnt guidelines in my activity. and as a concerned citizen, and a journalist, i was *safely* documenting an incident where a member of the public felt she was being unfairly treated by police officers 7/

we are in a public health emergency, not a police state. surely officers must not be able to act without scrutiny, and journalists must not be aggressively stopped from documenting what they see. this should go without saying. i have a video, names, badge numbers & vehicle reg 8/

i have been very careful to keep my distance from anyone - as per government instructions. today your officers have put me at risk. and at the same time, clearly believe they should no longer be subject to scrutiny of public or press. i will be lodging a complaint tomorrow.

Your typical microwave operates at 800 Watts.

Mobile sites around 20 - 30W per frequenvy channel, and this is reduced in urban scenarios
