Newcastle and Sunderland race for Modibo Maiga

Sep 25 2011 by James Hunter, Sunday Sun

NEWCASTLE are tracking Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga – but could face a challenge for signature from rivals Sunderland.

Scouts from both North East sides were at Sochaux’s 2-2 draw at Lille last weekend to watch the 23-year-old Mali international, Newcastle sending chief scout Graham Carr, while European spy Dean White represented the Black Cats.

Newcastle almost landed Maiga for £7m in the summer, but now Sunderland have expressed an interest, the clubs could find themselves fighting it out for his signature in the January transfer window.

United were frustrated in their efforts to sign a striker in the summer transfer window and, despite a positive start to the season, are looking to act in January.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce signed Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day at the end of August.

However Asamoah Gyan’s subsequent departure to the United Arab Emirates with Al-Ain means Bruce will be in the market for another striker once the window opens again.

If we sign he will be quality.

If he goes to the mackems, worst signing in the history of the game.

    Obviously

Id rather get a more established striker, especially if we are throwing 7m about

Going by our recent signings I'd trust that this guy is more than good enough.

Thought he came out this week & said he'd decided to stay at Sochaux? Wasn't he 3rd or 4th choice Target? Got a feeling G Carr may of found us someone else by January

  12. He doesn't look that good. I'd rather we go for someone else.

Don't really want this guy. We need someone in the mould of a Bellamy and not another Ameobi type.

The mackems can have him. His scoring record's far from great (and that's in the French league) and his attitude's poor too. He was something like 3rd backup on our 'shopping list' in the summer anyways, and i'd expect we'll have found better targets than him to go for by January.

I was never sold on him or Erdinc in summer. I'm sure between now and January Carr will have found better targets.

The only thing I like about Sunderland is Niall Quinn, think he's a great chairman.

I like what this guy commented...

    blythy2011 says

Dodged a bullet there cause this player is nowhere near the standard we need to improve. Hes no better than whats already here. Give Sammy Ameobi a shot instead.

I'd much rather we spent £7m on a new LB and maybe some CB cover. Give Sammeobi a try and if he doesn't start to produce the goods then maybe look at other options. As it stands though, a dedicated LB is needed and Santon should be a replacement for Simpson. Our full-backs are the weakest links in our team imo.
