Just wondering what everyone thinks on the following point.

After watching the replays of Suarez's goal, I wonder if Kenny might have a word with him about being selfish.

Obviously a striker has to be selfish to a certain point... but sometimes if a pass is on, and it will benefit the TEAM, then surely that pass should be made.

Suarez found himself in a very tight situation... and although it was indeed a great goal, if he had messed it up then you would understand Carroll being very upset that he was not played in.

Take a look at the situation again:

As we know, Suarez turned his man inside out and smashed into the gap between post and keeper on the near side. (Blue line)

But I think the better thing to have done would have been to play the square ball... especially considering how some fans seem to be turning on the big man already - giving him a simple goal like this would have really helped in my opinion. (red lines for pass and potential easy sidefoot home)

Of course, it doesn't really matter, he scored anyway, so all is forgotten. But... if he had missed, there would be real questions to be asked as to why he didnt pass.

I agree with you, but to be honest I think he would have passed it if he didn't think he could score. He's trying to put on a show aswell as score goals and put a performance in, and it's a joy to watch him so I think the only thing he needs to improve on is his finishing.

Agreed mate, I was furious with Gerrard in the FA cup final, there was a simple ball on to the full back, and he decides to smash it from 30 yards, if that hadn't have gone in then we'd have lost possession and the game! Its absolutely ridiculous, and I really hoped Benitez would have a word with him, because he's got history with these type of incidents, remember Olympiakos?

I was convinced he was gonna set Carroll up but then he scored so that was soon forgotten.

Hes a magician anywhere the opponents goal line and scores goals for fun out of nothing scenarios, and long may it last.

    Hes a defenders nightmare.

guys.... suarez has a long history of being selfish. any ajax fan would tell you that. you're right of course but i'd like to point out that you have to put up with the misses cos the things he brings to the table are amazing but he aint going to change!

He's a striker. It's his job to score. He wanted to score. It was not late in the game, he was confident in his ability, saw the opportunity and took it. had he passed and missed, we would be rueing why he didn't shoot instead.

Just because a player can does not mean he should pass. It is good to be selfless, but bad if that leads to a lack of goals. We don't want to pass back all the time, we can't walk into the net. Shots are shots. There's a difference between a shot this close by Suarez and a shot going yards wide by Adam from outside the box. Suarez is more likely to score than miss, while a player like Adam is not a clinical shot taker.

So no, if anything I'd like to see more players taking initiative. More shots, but to be taught that passing is good only if it is a better option.

Didn't get to see the game (will watch highlights in a min) but from that shot I don't see how he could hae successfuly squared the ball. Carroll isn't even in the box at that point and isn't exactly the fastest player. Now look at the Wolves keeper, unless suarez's pass would have been pin point accurate and perfectly weighted then I reckon it would be a relatively easy pick-up for him or a relativel simple dive to the left to block a direct shot. Then there's the question of whether Carroll would have skyed the ball or not... <whistle>

Which attitude would you rather have..Suarez with a 'I want to score every time I have a chance' or Peter crouch yesterday 'Yes I did have a chance to win it but I'm happy with 1 and you can't be greedy' Nice guy Crouchie but you know what they say about nice guy's.
I think it's very unfair to start slagging off Suarez, his desire makes him the player that he is and if memory serves I think he has already set up several goals/chances since his arrival with his selfless running and work rate.
If he scored how can it be wrong?

If you watch the goal, Saurez doesn't even look up. His head is always down and his concentration is purely to beat the defender and score.

Actually just seen it again on MOTD and a pass to Carroll would have been very risky..

it would have...why are we having this conversation anyway...HE SCORED FOR GODS SAKE!

But I have to hand it to the OP, I like his method of using still images from the game to talk about tactics. Maybe we should use this often when discussing moments of the game...more so when we didn't score.

It was a great goal. I liked Kenny's comment on MOTD. The interviewer said "That's one even you would have been proud off?" Kenny: "At my age yes."

All top strikers are selfish...thats what makes them top strikers. Dirk Kuyt can be incredibly selfless, but when he needs to be selfish, he can be selfish.

It would have been a risky pass, he got his chance, he loves beating defenders, he scored..

Most players you need a good balance of being selfish and being a team player, its hard to get right as they can't always have the time to look up. In this instance he had the opportunity he had been waiting for, so he took it..

I agree with 'Elpisteros..' about Dirk Kuyt, the only player who I can honestly say has the selfish/team player thing balanced so well. Its one of the reasons he has scored so many vital goals for us, he knows when to shoot and when to pass.

Suarez is different, he has hunger, desire, he always wants to win, thats why he had a fit when he got subbed off. His a joy to watch and you can see how much he enjoys it when his on the pitch.

His heart is in it for us, something that makes great players into legends.

Also the amount of times Saurez has been screaming for the ball only for it not to be played to him like in Sunderland away last season, and Stoke this season.

He scored it, save this conversation for when he does it and doesn't score. But tbh, a pass to Carrroll still looks very risky on that screenshot.

He figured the keeper could see the runner in the middle. If the keeper just had the Suarez to deal with I think he'd have done better but he had one eye elsewhere.

    Good awareness by Suarez.

As if you wanted him to pass to carroll.

    Are you guys on crack?

Kenny should insist nobody passes to carroll. That way you might have a chance of the top 4 this season.
