When this is all over we'll be inundated with experts, academics and chancers producing statistics which support their particular position or direct blame at whoever they oppose. The layman, like me, will be none the wiser. I only hope that lessons are learned about where public money needs to be spent and how public resources are best supported.

Too much negativity and falling out on the thread recently. Have a listen to this and if it doesn't leave you with warm feelings to one and all you're beyond repair!

It's not as bad as that mate.

Those are resolved cases. Total (known cases) are 4692 here and 4299 are mild.

However, 393 were serious (hospital serious) of those 16 have been discharged and 239 have sadly died. The rest are in hospital.

The vast majority never got to hospital, in fact most didn't know they had it so aren't in that 4k. That said if you do end up in hospital the outlook isnt great.

I guess that number should normalise as cases increase.

An American newspaper did that with a town in northern Italy. They found the death rates in the first quarter (and this was during March with time to go) were several times those of any other year. The official coronavirus death count in this town was much smaller than the difference, so more people died of other stuff too.

We can actually do that same comparison for Q1 now in the UK if anyone knows where to find the figures. Although we are not yet anywhere near as hard hit as that north Italian town so I expect it will be much of a muchness.

I'll see if I can find it, but I was reading an article that was suggesting that the previous mild winter meant that the usual 'winter cull' was lower than average, meaning there was a pool of susceptible individuals effectively waiting for a bug to send them on their way.

Apparently ca. 1500 die every day in the UK as an average. So yesterday's Covid19 500 deaths on top were 30% more than usual.

However, death rates are higher in winter months due to winter illnesses, so this has to be factored in.

I wasn’t seriously suggesting that, but it’s obviously a positive company message too.

Hope it does work of course

So Germany is managing to test 500,000 per week, we have a target and current capability to do 10,000 per day but not even doing that.

Just seen on German TV that their next step is tracking by mobile phone those who have tested positive. Something that was done in South Korea apparently.

That's interesting, but probably needs to be over a longer period for any significance. Surely Q1 is far too early. The expert was suggesting most would die within a few months, so probably need figures 6 months after it's over (or the first wave?)

****s. My mother had COPD and was on three times weekly dialysis, she also had five DNR forms, she signed none of them and binned the lot. She eventually decided to give up the dialysis and went at the time of her choosing, on her terms. Every time she was admitted to hospital the doctors gave her the same guff about the DNR form, every time she told them to clear off!
Not sure if it's the same elsewhere but in Hull it's now called a Respect form, pfttt.

If they do start testing here, I hope they put up some decent revision site to help us out.
