bit like cryptic crossword clues a lot of them. you often need to twist words that sound like other words or bits of the words. you need to get inside the head of whoever set the questions. bit of practice helps along with knowing a history of city players.

red indian greeting, allegedly = how!
a settlement - i went through things like reservation, camp, etc. maybe the word indian is better off with greeting

Haven't seen the answer to these two yet though, plus I think there's still a couple of chantstiger's original ones that no-ones got.

    1. Ask a hippy to get down on his knees
    2. Queen's small south african barbecue

Edit: they're both a bit **** / spurious - maybe the first one makes more sense as "What a hippy would say if he asked you to get down on your knees"

okay, just realised that number 17 (Exclamation of pain in a joint on Bransholme, argh…) isn't about a place in bransholme, it's about pronunciation. joint could be an ending like -ney. the race is on...

    ouchney.... or something.

cant quite shoehorn cairney to fit... delaney would have to be a late joint...
