Yes. The reason vaccines are as far along as they are is that upon realising how devastating this would be, the Chinese sequenced every part of the virus as fast as possible and shared it very openly with the entire world. They blew the whistle loudly as soon as they realised what this was and they did everything to help the outside world. They showed how to contain it, they have shared knowledge, they donated and gifted any equipment or resource they had spare and more are leaving the country now that they are levelling off. Kuwait just announced they had received thermal scanning gates to help them triage groups. The problem is that a lot of the world didn’t listen, and others listened but then badly mishandled early cases to the point that it was out of control (Italy, Spain, South Korea). The South Korea one is particularly sad because they did everything right, but patient 31 was missed. Then one lady infected over 1000 people, with no idea what was happening to her or those around her.
That is what is happening in Iran and Italy, yes. South Korea has asked that families delay funerals. Spain had a large outbreak cluster linked to a funeral and have been considering whether they need to ban them. I realize how grim all of this is. These are going to be grim times.
I get how raw this is. I can't imagine the pain of having loved ones die and being unable to properly mourn. But if I died, I also wouldn't want my loved ones dying for that privilege, either.
I think Schad is right though Jasper. ALL gatherings of people have to be stopped so how can that not include funerals? Believe me, not attending one of my family or friend’s funeral would be horrendous, but maybe we will have to have some other way of collectively mourning, like having video links to the service or something.
Italy reports 6557 new cases of #Coronavirus and 793 new deaths. Total number of Confirmed cases reach 53,578 and Total death toll reaches 4825 Fatality rate= 9% 793 New Deaths in a Single day.
One subtlety in the comparison between WWII 'panic buying' and the current round of shelf stripping is that, for the most part, during the war (I sound like Uncle Albert) shops in Britain required customers to ask for items, which were picked up by shop assistants, and handed over. The introduction of rationing and needing coupons for specific products further limited the ability of people to take whatever they wanted, with no thought for their fellow man. I suspect that people in the 1940s were no more or less altruistic than they are today, but the ability to take whatever was on offer, and bugger everyone else, was not an option, when people could not serve themselves. Supermarkets are belatedly trying to limit the number of items that any one person can buy, and they are trying to organise times when only certain people can enter their shops (such as Health workers, or the elderly), but when hospital staff can only go shopping at the end of their shift, the ability to purchase necessities at other times is not an option. How long before we all get ration books, and a black market springs up?
Its unfortunately not an unlikely action. Funerals are already illegal in places like Italy, in France i think i read its banned too with only a tiny number of people allowed at a burial.
People will always gather in groups even if you shut everything down, it's human nature. Also if you close shops, how do people eat?
We are at that stage known as the phoney war. The **** hits the fan in a fortnight to three weeks. People who ignored the advice will regret it but sadly some people will not be alive to regret it or to confront the people who did and in so doing brought about their death. FFS listen and as for Le Tissier the bloke may have been a good footballer but God he is thick as ****. He has gone from hero to zero in one stupid sentence.
It has to happen. Every single person that we can distance to slow this down, has to happen ASAP. This is still growing at an absolutely absurd rate, and we are still doing anywhere near enough. This disease will kill millions worldwide
You leave grocery stores open, allow food delivery. That's been the MO everywhere that has undertaken lockdowns. And people HAVE TO STOP GATHERING IN GROUPS. We talk about normal patterns of behaviour, but these are not normal times. People will adjust. They will have to.
