Good Morning. It's Monday 16th March, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Postponement of season could not have come at a better time for Whites

With the Corona Virus continuing to spread like wildfire, Soccer fans are coming to the realisation that the remainder of the season will be scraped; but in truth it couldn't have come at a better time for Leeds!

Not only had Leeds regained top spot in the Championship from West Brom but have built up a vital seven point gap between themselves and third place Fulham.

As far as bogey teams are concerned, you'd have to put Cardiff on that list. Leeds have only managed a draw and three defeats in the last four encounters, with the Bluebirds netting twelve times, and the Whites replying with just five.

Lets not forget the six pointer against Fulham that was scheduled for Wednesday. Had these matches gone against us, although still within the top two, our position would not have been so strong!

Most likely outcome if season is scrapped

Reading through media reports and listening to Specialist Lawyers over the weekend, it seems the most likely outcome would be no relegation from the Premiership, but the top two teams from the Championship to join the elite next season, extending the Premiership to twenty two teams. This would certainly be a get out of free jail card for Norwich who are rooted bottom of the Top Tier, six points from safety.

Another option would be to duplicate the result of the reverse fixture for the remaining nine games. Although obviously a home team has an advantage over a visiting team, the same handicap would apply to the other 23 clubs.

    The financial Implications on Leeds

Senior Management are meeting this lunch time to discuss the financial implications of no match day income.

With many of the Leeds players being awarded new lucrative contracts, and the hierarchy breaking the bank to bring top loanee talent with Premiership wages to Elland Road this season; Leeds could find themselves in a position where the Chairman may have to dip his hand in his own pocket to pay the staff and players.

In 2018, Leeds were paying out 20m on wages. Leeds Managing Director Angus Kinnear reveled last October that it has doubled since then to just over 40m. This is higher than Sheffield Utd, Norwich, Wolves, Brighton, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Burnley!

    Morning all...

I believe we’ll see teams promoted from each division and no relegation IF another ball isn’t kicked. I haven’t ruled out teams finishing this season behind closed doors either or an extension of the season by the postponement of the Euros.

What isn’t being mentioned is how many teams would survive the season ending now with zero income? We could easily lose a dozen or more teams unable to cope with the financial strain.

    What about Sky Sports.

    Shouldn't they get a refund?

This was the first weekend in this country where sport has been cancelled.
We have had hugely supported football, rugby and other sports, we've had full pubs and clubs and other mass gatherings and, regrettably, we've had 35 deaths. The youngest was 59 with underlying conditions, virtually all the others have been in their 80s and 90s with underlying health conditions.
The panic over this is becoming absolutely ridiculous. The repercussions of stopping life and work going on for a period of time will have much greater effect on everyone than this virus ever will.
Let's please get a perspective on this.

Peter Ridsdale on SSN just now saying it would be ridiculous to promote Leeds & West Brom on current standings as it wouldn't be fair to the other chasing teams. Can't really argue with that logic but that also means you can't just cancel the season as that would be unfair on Leeds, West Brom and the chasing teams, it only benefits those teams in relegation positions (eh Karen Brady ?).

Morning all I believe VD may have originated in China so any of you young lads with a dose will have a Chinese double if you are affected by the Coronavirus.

    Morning all.

Back home 2 weeks early. Got chucked off our cruise ship 18 hours after being told we had to get off. Thanks, Trumpy! Bastardo. :emoticon-0173-middl :emoticon-0181-fubar

So, the 400 of us affected were kindly granted the free use of 2 phones to make urgent long haul arrangements to get home from Chile. I had to wait 4 hours to use the phone. Essential, I discovered, as part of buying an airline ticket abroad appears to involve getting a One Time Password (OTP) texted to you. Only, being at sea, there is no mobile phone service! So you have to phone your provider to over-ride the process. Much fun was had by all. Not.

So now back home and getting the full force of 7/24 news, compared to the occasional snippet we were used to. It appears I have a responsibility to get down to Morrisons to clear the shelves of lavvy rolls, like everyone else has apparently been doing. Surprising, that - thought it would have been beer that would have been first off the shelves. And hangover cures.

Don't know what all the speculation is all about re. the outstanding fixtures. Like everything else important in footie, it's Sky that will decide what happens. The clubs, FA, EFL, the lot of them have all budgeted on receiving the cash from Sky, & Sky will only pay out if the matches take place. This seems to have escaped everyone's notice, as far as I can see. As Leeds60 alluded to earlier, if we've previously managed to recover from an 11 week hiatus, then the current situation is a doddle. 9 games, at 2 (or even 3?) games a week? A month will do it. Cup ties can be postponed until the start of next season. Games can be played behind closed doors. The current 'isolation' period should flush out players suffering. Seems straightforward, doesn't it? And naive. :D

Why they aren't giving customers one, they are making it as difficult as possible to cancel sky sports despite there being no sports on.

Makes more sense to promote than null and void the season as we have played 37 matches (if no further games are played)

To be fair he did follow up to say he believed the season must be completed.

At least that is what I believe I heard through the steam cloud around me created when I saw his name and face and heard his voice!! <grr><grr>
