Sickness procedures in workplaces (where if you have 5 days off sick in any 12 month period you are put on stage one of monitoring...at stage 3 you job is at risk and where promotions are lost if you are on sickness monitoring) have led to a culturewhere people go to work, drugged up to the eyesballs spreading the illness to others on public transport, in coffee shops and in work. I think this (along with zero hours contracts where people get either no sick pay or are actually fined, so lose money if they are off sick) has led to this being spread far wider than it would have done 20 or so yesrs ago.

It would not surprise me if people were still going to work even if they were ill.

A culture shift is needed and once this has calmed down this is something that needs to be addressed imho.

Hopefully it won't be as bad as feared but tbh I ain't got a fecking clue what is going on.

Yeah I'm not really looking forward to it if I'm honest. Especially hungover. Don't even know/like half the ****s there.

One of my mates is swerving due to being self employed and unable to afford a weeks loss in wages.

He is right though in that the static guidelines around sickness in a lot of places encourage you to go to work unwell. I wouldn't do it with this obviously but have done so in the past.

I reckon they'll close the schools this week. My kids are apoplectic that it hasn't happened already.

Yes I agree it's just my personal experiences with peoples attitude of using it as something they are entitled to.
We had this conversation at work a few months ago and one lad just said if we had sick pay I'd abuse it to the Max.
I worked at a company in the eighties that paid 6 weeks a year .
Suddenly a few started taking time off so it stopped .

Gremio players wore masks in the build-up to the match against Sao Luiz but removed them before the game started
Players from Brazilian club Gremio took to the field wearing masks on Sunday in protest at having to play a football match as fears over coronavirus grow in the South American nation.

The players, led by boss Renato Portaluppi, walked out of the tunnel and lined up before the game against Sao Luiz wearing the masks.

"This protest by the players makes implicit our support for the championship to be halted - life must take precedence," said Paulo Luz, Gremio's director of football.

My company has been looking at who has the tech to work from home for the last week or so, and an email this morning saying they are looking at the people who are able to work from home and who don't need to be in the building. Can see me working from home within the next couple of days as not really essential to be on site!

Think a lot of companies have been waiting on guidance from the government but not really be coming, so will make their own decisions this or next week

We’ve started the first stage of our contingency plan this week with key personnel being set up to work from home, minimising the amount of contact between different areas of the business etc...

Businesses can’t hang around and wait for government advice when not acting quickly enough could have serious financial implications.

The state-run Global Times has reported about a petition on the White House website urging the US government to release more information on the suspension of an infectious disease research lab under the Pentagon.

The Global Times noted that Chinese internet users and experts are calling for more information on whether The Fort Detrick laboratory was linked to the novel coronavirus, citing coincidental events between the lab’s closure and the outbreak of Covid-19.

It noted many English-language news reports about the closure of Fort Detrick were deleted recently, raising “suspicions over the lab's ‘relationship’ with the novel coronavirus”.

This is the latest in a series of remarks by Chinese diplomats and the state media fuelling a theory that the virus did not originate in China, but was only found there.

Last week, the official Xinhua news agency claimed that the epidemic was first reported in China but “that does not mean it necessarily originated in China”.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian has even tweeted that “it might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan”.

Started sorting our work from home fallback today assigning laptops with VPN connections to Company Servers.

Also told the coffee boy that he would also be required to work from home - my home. Taking the coffee machine home tomorrow.

It's just making sure the communication and other software works and I should be on my way home.
