Just seen MOTD, really wish I hadn't. Terrible from Valery, all the time in the world to smash that out

The kid did okay. He was up against their best player, and unfortunately had a brain fart at the wrong time. Was happy to see him back, and put the conspiracy theories to bed.

This. Anyone who actually goes to matches rather than streaming them or watching MOTD will realise what it’s doing to the game.

    Poor fella.

F*ck football, or any sport for that matter. If you can't laugh and smile equally hard when you lose a game, as when you win a game, then you shouldn't watch sport. Simple.

VAR ruined a game 32,000 people had paid to see. I don’t call that using it well.

Haven’t watched MOTD yet, but just to step into the VAR debate, I don’t want It ditched as we can conveniently forget how frustrating it was when we concede and the replay shows the striker 2 feet offside. On the other hand, the penalty (brilliantly saved) was for an incident nobody saw or claimed for, including me who sits behind and above the goal. I think that one answer would be to give captains 2 challenges per half for offside/handball or fouls and then let the ref use VAR for things like red cards- I don’t like to see players encouraging refs to issue cards.
Regarding the game, once again I disagree entirely with Ian Thumbwood. Newcastle were poor in the main and there is no way they should been well ahead in the first half. They were only on top in the last 20 minutes as we tired. It obvious that had the pace and aggression of Redmond been available we could have pressed higher up the pitch, which as I mentioned before the game is when we are at our best.. At St Mary’s, I thought it had 0-0 written all over it, even when we were down to ten men. It’s an individual error leading to the goal but we coped pretty well, despite being a man down. Oh, and anyone who believes we are going down, is just plain wrong.

Winchester City won 2-1 away to Slimbridge are now 4th in the league table. Thatcham and Frome look uncatchable but I think City will get a play off position. Weird how little attention WCFC get on this board because Craig Davis is performing a minor miracle at the Simply Health ground and the football is often sublime.

    Good morning, Channon

You must sit just behind me then!

Just intrigued by what exactly you disagree with me about because the comments you have made largely seem to echo mine. Setting aside the fact that we had been reduced to 10 men, at 5 mins to 3 yesterday afternoon would you have been satisfied with another home defeat ? As you said and concur with me, Newcastle were poor. Two instances, the red card and Valery's error cost us the game but the concerted efforts in the first ten minutes should have produced a goal. I would reiterate that the results at home have not been good enough. I just think this kind of result (and I do not mean performance) throughout the season at St Marys is not really acceptable.

Just watched the pen decision on MOTD. Absolute bollocks - he was pulled as it hit his arm so you can’t say either way, not clear and obvious. We have been royally ****ed since the turn of the year on VAR.

Great to hear that. The non-league being the breeding ground for Vardy, Jamal Lowe, Ian Wright, Tony Book.

Well there is this for starters, Ian. And also the calling into question whether the manager is good enough, bearing in mind where we have come from. Am I alone in thinking, from our apparently adjacent seats in the Chapel, that Ian and I must have been watching different games?

Did you not think that Newcastle had gilt -edged opportunities to score in the first half? The Gayle missed two good chances and McCathy's heroics prevented two goals, including the penalty. The stats suggest Newcastle had 14 shots on goal with 7 on target.

Assuming you are a season ticket holder like myself, are you really happy with the results (not necessarily performances) at home ? As I said, Ralph has not been 100% backed by the board and the squad needed an overhaul last summer. However, it is difficult to see where the improvements are, even though I am a fan of Ralph. I cannot see that , from the perspective of a season ticket holder, there is much difference from the kind of results we were getting under MP2 and Hughes. I agree Ralph is an improvement but the this is not manifesting itself in wins. My concern is how long will Saints fans accept this situation. I think he needs to be supported in the transfer market and then we can judge. Certainly, the home results at least are suggestive that little progress is being made from the last two seasons.

From my view in the Kingsland/Chapel corner I instantly panicked because I could see Boufal’s shoulder / arm movement steer the ball and I can’t believe I’m the only one. What I didn’t see however was that Boufal was being pulled which is why his body shaped that way. So absolutely no issue var being used to look at it but as usual the total incompetence of the people looking at it came to completely the wrong decision.

It think the main problem with VAR is how far the game is being brought back to pick up infringements that happened several moments previously. The obvious example is the disallowed goal when Bournemouth thought they scored and the decision was to give a penalty the other end. VAR is unable to keep up with a fast moving game and this is making it look inefficient. I think it was a better sport without VAR and when a decision was made on the spot. I quite like the idea of other officials sat behind the goal which might give a much quicker decision. The reliance on remote technology is having a detrimental effect on football as a spectator sport.
