The shops next to Wawne Ferry pub .
They used to be made of wood .
They where supposed to be temporary but ended up lasting from 1970 til 1990

    • Do City's owners regret being too greedy back in the autumn of 2016 when the Tigers were up for sale in the PL?
    • Is 14 home goals conceded in one calendar month a record for City?
    • Has City's injury list ever been longer?
    • Do City have the worst stewarding and policing in the country? Do the club or the SMC ever hold debriefings after matches or review operations?
    • What has KPL done to offend Grant McCann?
    • What do the Allams think watching on from their box as the club loses heavily at home in front of a 1/3 full ground?

When I was a lad back in the early 70's I used to deliver the Sportsmail for John Turnbull on Chants Ave. An extra 15pence a round for delivering it down Westbourne and Marlborough Avenues.

    • Has any team ever had to play Eighth choice centre back?
    • Can not 606 board cope with just wondering and not having an answer?
    • Who was Frankie Bunn trying to cop off with when he had his jaw busted at Watefront?
    • What did happen to Tim Wilby?
    • What was Junior Lewis pointing at?
    • Did Barmby twat Ehab?
Ok I'm sure we can have some answers

I remember the fifties when a bloke on his bike selling the Sports Mail down Hotham Road. Later whilst in the Royal Navy having it sent to me wherever I was, the trouble was it was usually 3 weeks or more old. In those days of course both the Hull RL clubs results were included.

I delivered papers for Turnbulls on Chants as well, though i was probably a bit later than you. I got my first round a year earlier than I should have as I mistakenly gave them the wrong birth year.....:angel:

At one point I was doing mornings, nights and Sunday’s. Im sure Sunday rounds always paid more than during the week. I was also like John in that on a Saturday I would watch City then have to rush back to do my paper round, and have a slight break sat on the cupboard tops in the back before the greens came in. I remember when I was doing the Lynton ave round, I used to be able to get a good way down the street cutting through the gardens as they all had concrete just in front of the bay windows. So it took about 10 minutes to do the whole street, that was until one woman came out one day and threatened to set her dog on me if I didn’t stop cutting through. When I looked at the dog it was a Yorkshire terrier, I was absolutely terrified I would get mauled to death by it ..... well i was until the next night when I was back to cutting through again.... <laugh><laugh>

I stayed there until I got my apprenticeship at 16

My first job was a paper lad and you got 6p for delivering the Green Sports Mail. I did mornings, nights and Sunday's too and still I didn't earn a £1 in total. Worked at a newsagents on the corner of Sutton Road and Beverley Road and had to leave City before the end to catch the early circular bus back n time to do my night round. I was running across the Boothferry Park car park one game when a copper stuck his arm out as I ran past and floored me. He then asked me who was I chasing ? I said, with blood dripping from my nose and a busted lip that I was running to catch the bus.
I worked at HDM in the sports dept when I left school in 1970 so worked on the Sports Mail during the week. I started in the early summer but when the football season kicked off, and we'd just signed Terry Neill I didn't fancy working Saturdays, which hampered my thoughts of being a sports reporter somewhat. So they paid two Saturday lads more then I earnt all week to do my job.
I did miss Peterboro away in the Watney Cup that year and I was a bit pissed off about it because they didn't have cover for me then and I had to work.
Part of my job was setting the results out for publication as they came through on the ticker tape machine, and as I said I was pissed off, City had won 4-0 away and I'd missed it. So I made up the last three or four results up from the old Fourth Division. I didn't think any one took any notice of them. One was York City v someone who I thought was an odds on 1-1 draw so I wrote that in and it went to print as a 1-1 draw. Put the copy to print and I got off a few minutes early and thought nothing about it until I got to the office on Monday morning.
Jack Fluck the old sports editor looked over his glasses at me and asked who did the football results on Saturday ? 'Er, me Mr.Fluck….why do you ask
'Because I've just took a phone call from someone who thought they had eight draws on the coupon after they'd checked the results in the Sports Mail. Someone put York as a draw and they lost 2-0'
    Opps.
