Hello everyone, I hope this is okay to post here – if not, moderators please move or delete as appropriate. I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255). Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years. We are looking for the music that Hull have run out to for as many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons Hull ran out to this. Any help you can give us to piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would be hugely appreciated. If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic. I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the tannoy system as the players enter the field. If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the project. Thanks for your time, Joe Headland
Historically we're run out to Tiger Rag and Eye of the Tiger. I think there was a spell in the 90s where we didn't really have a consistent run-out song too. We've definitely run out to Hull City (The Tigers are Back) on occasion, and I'm sure I've heard us run out to Happy Hour by the Housemartins. The link to Hull City/Hull for all of these is obvious. I remember AP putting it out to the fans as to what to use when we ran out at the KC before it opened. In the end they melded together many of the options based around a reading of the Tyger Tyger Burning Bright poem by William Blake (I'm pretty certain I was the only one to suggest This Is The One by the Stone Roses, which made the mix).
Do you mean Hull City because Hull is a rugby league team. ? They run out to Cher's Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.
It wasn't what we came out to, but I always liked Galvanize by Chemical Brothers as the last song before everything started.
I thought it was Bad Manners, Lip Up Fatty. Actually when I'm anywhere else and talking football I always tell them I'm a Hull fan, and having visited the 92 no one has ever mistaken that for rugby. No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. Eleanor Roosevelt.
This is a useful thread https://www.not606.com/threads/tiger-rag.320406/ At least two versions of Tiger Rag were played fro late 40s to mid 70s, so this music is the oldest and most long-lived. When Harold Needler died in 1975, it signalled the end for 'Tiger Rag'. Did I dream it or did we also once run out to ? Shame we have lost/discarded so much of our heritage due to the apathy/****ishness/ desire to remodel the club of various owners.. It seems to be one of our oldest traditions.
Thanks City Man. I didn't attend my first game until 1982 so a lot of that is news to me. I have a very distinct memory of Tiger Rag being played at least once in the Dolan/Fish era (I think by live musicians) pre-match - though it may not have been as the players ran out. I only remember because I had to ask some older bloke what song it was and he looked it me in disgust for not knowing.
When I first started attending back in 1970, I remember there was a cheesy instrumental played on the Hammond organ that blared out as City came on. The original version of the current MOTD;theme was also played approaching kick off time to get everyone 'in the mood'.
I used to like hearing that bit from The Republika (think it was them) song as it meant it was time to make your way to the seat you was going to stand in front of. I have no recollection of Pre-game music at BP.
I seem to recall that during the Hately era we ran out to the theme from Local Hero. Could be wrong though. I do have a very clear memory of a minutes silence being broken with "avenging angels" by space which probably wasn't the best plan.
