"The band Bowie assembled comprised John Cambridge, a drummer Bowie met at the Arts Lab, Tony Visconti on bass and Mick Ronson on electric guitar. Known as Hype, the bandmates created characters for themselves and wore elaborate costumes that prefigured the glam style of the Spiders from Mars. After a disastrous opening gig at the London Roundhouse, they reverted to a configuration presenting Bowie as a solo artist."

    It looks like 1969
As it says above - London Roundhouse

Cheers Peter. I was just checking the gigs at Leeds Student Union ( I was there from summer '65 to summer '72, and occationally on trips back around Easter time until ''80 when I picked up the odd gig there). It surprised me that Bowie never had a gig at that venue. Unfortunately I never saw him perform live at any venue - something I regret.

My regret was not seeing Free live. They played at Hull City Hall but I was doing something else that night.

Saw Free 2 or 3 times during my stay in Leeds. No doubt in my mind that the mid-60's to early '70's was an incredibly fertile time for the music scene.
(on both sides of the Atlantic). Happy days.

Were Free on the bill at Burton Constable Hall?

That bloody past participle of the verb 'To be' still doesn't look right to me, even after all these years.

I think Bowie played at one of the free (no charge) concerts in East Park.

Just happened across a docu on Netflix last night David Bowie:Ziggy Stardust from 2006 I am sure most must have seen it but it has passed me by until now. Some nice live performances and a lot of interview time with with Trevor Bolder and Woody Woodmansey and amusing hearing Angie Bowie putting on an Ull accent when describing how she had to persuade Ronno to start dressing up and how she had to explain to Ronnos mum that Bowie and Micks certain guitar antic was just carefully staged...well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Saw them twice at Brid Spa. First time brilliant, second time after they had really hit the big time they seemed to be just going through the motions.Last concert I went to there as far as I can recall.
