I can remember when Elton John and rod stewart were the stars ....who are most of these stars.....halfof th3m can’t even speak English proper like.
I’ve left the wife and daughter downstairs to watch the ****. Wish the daughter would bugger off back to Uni, what the **** is reading week? sounds like to me do **** all week. I now have the cat keeping me company watching a film.
Well the Brits are over for another year......best part of tonight’s show was Rod Stewart and the Royal Philamonica Orchestra with guests Ronnie Wood and Kenny Jones....aged over 200 years between them......
It's so sad, the state of music now. I'm sure there's some good stuff out there but you'll never see it pushed like all the dross. What's even sadder is the likes of Rod are dwindling year on year. If I had a time machine there are two things I'd do - see the dinosaurs (from a safe distance!) and go back and record all those gigs lost in time, before everything got recorded.
...but good and bad music has always been around. For every great song in a particular decade there's also a huge amount of ****. My parents used to always go about how "you can't beat 60's music" - the decade that gave us Rubber Ball, Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini and Little White Bull. Now I'm sure there are also great songs from that era but my god there was a massive amount of **** around. I'd say the same for every decade since. And I'm sure a lot of our elders also complained about how "rubbish music is nowadays" whilst we were lapping it up as teenagers. Whilst I'm pretty disillusioned with mainstream stuff at the moment (and to be fair most of my life), it's never been easier to find new music thanks to the internet. Spotify has introduced me to so many bands and artists I would never have heard if I just listen to the radio or media. The artist radio function is just awesome.
Totally agree. But I'll add something else... whilst there's always been a **** load of crap there was also a **** load of excellent stuff. The amount of crap is irrelevant really, as long as there is enough quality. And that's the point I'd make - the good stuff declines steadily with time and that's a natural process, so all you're left with is just crap. Look at classical music - the majority of the classics are centuries old. Why do we not see a continual output of Mozart level classical music today? The innovation's been done for the most part and anything else is regurgitation or repetition with all best intentions. Same with modern music. It's all been done and we're now at the point where it's pretty dreadful for the most part. I don't search online like you so I can't comment on the quality of music that's not shovelled in the mainstream. I very much doubt I'm missing any new undiscovered Beatles though. I should add I didn't "lap it up as a teenager", I detested 80s music in general The nineties were better. All IMO, obviously.
Weirdly I though the 80's were **** at the time, but I find myself appreciating it a lot more these days. Do you use Spotify ?
I loved the Late 70's and the 80's sounds n fashions at the time. Lots of cheesy stuff about but some amazing sounds too, especially metal. 90's also good but very samey from then on with a few gems hidden amongst the dross imo. If it wasn't for the radio in work and the kids playing me new stuff I'd have missed otherwise, then it would be just the same old clone band sounds and rap crap now !
If I think about it I can find a lot of 80s I did and do like. I detested new romantic and bands like Duran Duran etc. (I won't list them all, it could take a while!). The crud's clouded my memory I don't use Spotify or any music streaming service. It wouldn't hurt to take my head out of the sand and have a nose around at some point.
I only use Spotify for music nowadays. I don't have a CD player or DVD player set up at home. Whether it be at home, work or driving in the car I'm just listening on Spotify. Apart from the enormous catalogue of songs, it's a fantastic way to find new music. It has an Artist Radio thing. Basically if you play a song - there's an Artist Radio button which will then play songs of similar genre to that artist. I've stumbled across a load of bands I've never heard of before whilst using that function. I love it.
I'm slowly getting my mojo back, to coin a phrase, and getting back into music, both recording and listening. I lived for music when I was younger. I'll check it out, thanks.
@Stereo - Have you pre-ordered the new Atari console or do you plan getting it? I like the wooden case but wouldn't bother myself just for a front end to the games. I loved the 2600 as a kid. Didn't have one, so was very envious of the neighbours who did.
