So they lied, and lying to a governing body is a punishable offence.

They also refused to cooperate with the governing body, a second punishable offence.

So it's against the rules that city signed up for.

You want to play in a uefa comp? Abide by its rules.

Had something similar in Rugby League a few years ago.
Rich owner said he was going to spend over the salary cap and questioned its legality.
The RFL came out with a statement pretty much saying that any team can spend whatever they like on players etc.
However, to participate in their league, they must abide by the rules which they agreed to.
So no one can stop City spending, but they can stop them from entering tournaments, leagues and so on.
**** City. If they wanted to challenge the rules, take it to court BEFORE you spend the money. The fact they’ve tried to cover it up shows that they knew exactly what they did was shady.

I'm sure someone else has already said this but, it's because UEFA decide that they have some.rules that they'd like all their member clubs to abide by.

To be financially self sustaining is one them.

Some fans might not like that, understandably if your own club has just been bailed out and handed the odd billion, but it's a rule.

A rule/law/whatever. One City have flaunted.

    Blatantly.

And yet, thanks to their inflated sponsor, they are effectively self-sustaining.

    I guess so, yes.

The argument against FFP is that it creates a closed shop.

The current top clubs with the most revenue via CL etc will always be able to outspend the rest.

If the spending is done accruing massive debt then I’d agree that it should be stopped or you could end up like Leeds, but if annual losses are converted into equity and the club is not building a debt mountain then I don’t see who that harms, barring those clubs who are happier keeping the others fiscally restricted.

City are clearly not self sustaining though?

I kind of agree it's not 'harming' anyone, they were seemingly chosen at random by an emirate with literallly a bottomless pit of money, rather than an individual with quite the opposite (like Leeds, obvs).

Does it not skew the whole financial structure of football though? Just a tad?

They’re not far off though. They actually declared a profit in their latest accounts, albeit you could argue that it’d have been a loss had the Abu Dhabi Etihad sponsorship been at the true market value. Still, they’ve built a club with revenues now well over £500m p.a., and it’s not racked up debt.

As for skewing the financial structure of football, to some extent I’d say yes, but nowhere near what the vast increase in TV revenues have.

How is it a closed shop? City spent over a billion and won many trophies. FFP didn't stop them.

Their refusal to follow the financial rules was only punished with a miniscule fine and a minor restriction on the size of their CL squad.

What they're in trouble for now is telling outright lies to UEFA and a refusal to comply with the investigation process.

You can walk into a court as a completely innocent witness but if you spend the entire time lying to the judge and being hostile and uncooperative will still end up getting punished.

City are not above the law. Anyone behaving as they have done would be punished regardless of spending.

FIFA’s entire case is based on stolen emails mate.

Yes but they're real emails, and UEFA didn't steal them.

Doesn’t matter who stole them, they’d be inadmissible evidence in a court of law.

CAS will **** it clean off for exactly that reason imo.
