As I mentioned on an earlier post I was only eleven and lived at Houghton le Spring at the time , apparently the school was half empty as the Manchester United team coach climbed Houghton Cut , can’t testify to it as I was off school due to cup fever and was at the ground early with my Dad to make sure we got in . Never let things like school get in the way of a big match .
I have tried looking it up (as I spoke from memory), and so far have drawn blanks, I read it in a newspaper article at the time and its one of those things that stick in the memory. If I solve it I will answer my own post.
Too early for me but Roker Park looked great - shame there is no sound. It looks like they were playing in the dark at the end
It was in the days when 2nd or subsequent FA Cup replays were played on neutral grounds, usually at a stadium as near as possible equidistant from where the respective teams were located - I never understood therefore why this match was played at Roker Park (I was there and iirc Scunthorpe won 2-1 after extra time)!
I also attended a SAFC V Leeds second replay at Hull of all places ,again the choice of venue was mystifying don’t know why it couldn’t have been at Middlesbrough. The journey seemed endless and people were on their doorsteps watching the traffic winding through their villages as the roads were all choked , the FA have a lot to answer for .
Saw four games in the 1966 World Cup Italy V Chile , Soviet Union V Italy , Soviet Union V Chile , the Quarter final was Soviet Union V Hungary . Abiding memory was the Italian players being pelted with tomatoes when they returned to Italy after being beaten by North Korea and not progressing to the Quarter Finals . Know Mazzola was a very talented player but can’t help with the coffin or leopard stories .
No I wasn’t part of the pitch invasion but the referee was about on par with the crap officials we are getting now , George Herd being sent off as he was so incensed along with George Mulhall was an illustration of how BAD the referee was . George Herd was a gentleman footballer who wouldn’t say boo to a goose but we were kicked to hell and every decision went against us even a saint would have reacted . No love lost whenever we meet Leeds it’s no the wonder .
