Swimming and aqua aerobics could also help. The wife needs two new knees and is being helped by the IMSK clinic at our local hospital with three monthly injections to keep her off the operating table. She's got into aqua aerobics and finds it very helpful.
Aye mate they’re probably better to be fair for joint impact. I can swim but don’t do it as a sport/hobby so can’t really offer advice on it.
Done a fair bit of swimming.. good exercise if other (aging) problems prevent running, have to watch for rotator cuff problems when doing front crawl. Do not do much cycling but reckon I should do more.. has anybody used a good indoors one
Those Peleton ones are the bees knees but very expensive. just been thinking, I use indoor rowers as well they’re a great all round exercise and get a good sweat on. Concept 2 are the best but any is better than none. .
Cycling on the roads would scare the hell out of me. My Gym work includes about 15 minutes of cycling, but I'm not supposed to use the 'laid back' bike as I have to keep the knee bend below the hip level (that's not well described, but fortunately I know what I mean, or I think I do)
Those injections were no help to me. I have friends who swear by them though. As for swimming, I love it. But there is a snag. I have a 'stiff back' which means I find it difficult to do breast stroke, or just about any stroke as I can't keep my head up. But on holidays I use a surface snorkelling mask. This means I can lie flat on the water with my head down, (looking at the seabed and fishes), and breath comfortably. So an hours swim is no problem. Sadly you are not allowed to use any form of snorkel in UK, so I'm told. Health and safety no doubt. The fact that one of these masks makes you more buoyant and it's impossible to swallow any sea water would seem to be dangerous!!!!
There October just gone. Went into the hotel bar first night, first drink. A beer and a G&T please. How does $29.75 sound sir said the barman. Possibly similar to your broken nose if you dont change the price I said. Anyway drank elsewhere after that but yes prices are a p*sstake.
A hybrid for off road might be useful if you have any trails nearby. Anywuit sounds like you’re quite active so don’t need me banging on but have you tried skipping, I love it.
I have a hybrid, cos too many off the country lanes are scary for cycling...we have a wood yard nearby and the lorries are huge
There’s too many drivers don’t give a **** about cyclists mate. I’ve had two bad accidents on racers one my fault one a car pulled out and it’s not worth the risk. The leotard and helmet don’t offer much protection.
Yeah it went away after a couple of years, but I blame it for the rest of my hip/knee trouble since then. Had a hip replacement 5 years ago and a knee 2 and a half weeks ago.
I'm trying to hold off on my knee replacement for as long as i can. Had 7 knee ops so far on the same knee. Surgeon reckons that the replacement will last 15 years. I'm 61 now so if i can wait another 3 or 4 years (although it bloody hurts) then i should only need it replaced twice.
Skipping. I'm the least well co-ordinated soul I know. Probablies end up hanging myself But from a practical point of view, the replaced knee is far more restricting than the hips. There's a lot less bend and I suspect that the impacts might be a little painful. Even as a bairn I couldn't skip and there's no reason to imagine that I've improved since over the last 70 years. My point in joining this thread is to advise anyone who fancies trying running, to do it. It's not all 13 mile slogs, there are shorter runs, and they can be fun. Specially when you get to the end and meet up with fellow idiots in the Pub. Ive tried the GNR for a fast time. I've started last, to see how many I could pass. Walked it twice. Got an entry in the pub on the night before the race once , so did it without any training. (I'd had an Achiles problem). Took me four days to walk in a line after that. And once taken a blind girl round with me being the guide. I've done it in rain, cold and heat. I've enjoyed them all and just wish I could do another one.
