    Doesn't justify it.

Just because you say the word football doesn't make it relevant, I'm not going to post a topic asking what it'd be like if Hitler was a football manager. <doh>

In this instance, the rugby player is pretty much calling for games to be moved from Sundays, so is trying to foist his unreasonable beliefs on other people. I don't think any person is totally rational and we all believe stupid little things that others could easily mock, so I think you have a point about not necessarily needing an onus of proof to believe something.

I do, however, think it's a shame when religious people let their imaginary beliefs get in the way of making the most of life. So I reserve the right to preach the sermon of logic!

And for what it's worth, this thread really should be on GC.

Hitler had a lot of positives aswell.

Its the bad stuff he did though that leaves a bitter taste. Just like religion. Sure there are good bits but for the most part its a truly evil concept. A form of government that if used today would rank alongside the most evil dictatorships in human history.

Many religions will gladly tell none believers we are going to hell or we will be judged in death and other such bullshit.

I just cut to the chase.

Personally I don't believe in God and would be pretty unhappy if religion dictated when sport could be played. Bad enough that it is taught in schools as it is.

But if this guy feels this way, then fair play to him for saying it. I think it could hurt his future international prospects as the calendar will not be changed to suit what is a minority they, nor should it be.

Would it really? How much do you actually know about religion? Are you ignoring all the people who are motivated to do good because of their beliefs? Seems very selective to me.

I'm religious but don't go to church, and i don't preach it to others, but it's his faith and his religion means alot to him. A lot of footballers are religious and still play on Sunday, so i'm not sure..

Murray is entitled to his views and to practice his faith. He is not as far as I know criticising his colleagues for playing on a Sunday and therefore what's the problem? Also this is old news. He announced his refusal to play on Sundays back in December 2009 but because Scotland is in the WC the media have decided to run with the story. He isn't the first Christian sportsman to put his principles/faith before personal gain e.g. Eric Liddell.

I really find this quite ironic. We follow a sport dominated by money grabbing, disloyal and greedy footballers and yet when we see a professional sportsman prepared to sacrifice sporting achievement and fame rather than infringe upon his faith; some people are furious.

The bible states that homosexuality is wrong, so I do not see why non religious people should go "Ahh, they can believe what they want, just let them live their lives" when they're so willing to criticise and destroy other peoples lives.

    Okay.

    Christian Bible, New Testament: (Slavery)

There are also seriously malevolent acts by people responsible for writing holy books:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banu_Qurayza#Demise_of_the_Banu_Qurayza

These of course aren't the only examples, there are in fact worse out there but I'm not all that arsed about spending hours on end listing the **** wrong with religious books when plenty of better speakers and writers than me have been doing it for centuries anyway.

Opinions, and to an extent religions, are like farts. Yours are fine but everybody else's stinks of ****.

    I'll be off now.

I see a few people have said religion doesnt hurt anyone....

    Are you serious?

Perhaps you should read up on religion and find out some of the stuff beyond Sunday School and such.

The texts, the actions, the control. 3 things that give religion its evilness.

We are without exception the most intelligent and developed species known to man. Nobody but ourselves can judge us.

The problem is that he's trying to hold the fixture bods and international set-ups to ransom: "I don't see why there have to be games on Sundays," said Murray. "I hope things will change in future." If he went about his business quietly, I don't think anyone would really give a damn, but when he tries to guilt trip sport associations into changing their fixture arrangements to accomodate unreasoned beliefs, he's just making himself look like a pious pillock.

Again, he's not just abstaining, he's complaining.

Is anyone making apologies for the greed that is riddling football? I thought supporters were almost unanimously against the way the game has gone unless I've missed something. This guy - fair enough - isn't letting sport impose upon his silly beliefs. But at the same time, he is trying to impose the consequences of his silly beliefs on sport. Glad football doesn't have one of these characters to my knowledge.
