Yeah he's got a hell of a thick skin, exactly what you want from a manager. Rubs off on the players too.
Dunno if this has been posted but it seems appropriate ... Phil Parkinson: The man trying to turn the oil tanker at Sunderland https://www.skysports.com/football/...n-trying-to-turn-the-oil-tanker-at-sunderland
Kept it to myself but just before the unbeaten run started (or when McGeady got dropped) I was ready for him to go. Never thought he would though as the January window was coming up. I will happily eat humble pie or whatever as all I want is for Sunderland to do well. As it happens I am very happy for him personally as he seems a decent fella. Just keep it going for a few more months.
I have to say, I’m still not 100% convinced that he was the prime appointment. That out of the way though, the man deserves enormous credit and praise, he dug in, he made decisions and he rode it out, and he’s got us looking as fit as we have since big Sam. He has my full support now, I couldn’t possibly comment on if someone else could have done better, essentially we are now back around where we were when he got the job, so we will see. If we are still flying after a tough February, he will have me fully won over, but the fact that I’m onside and behind him is testament to what he’s done, I never thought for a second I’d swing in his favour. Well done Parky.
Was willing to give him time at first, but after the Bolton game I wanted him gone. Suddenly, during the game down at Donny, we looked transformed, and have continued that good run. The last 3 games haven't been pretty, but we've come out of it with 7 points. They're the type of results which will see us promoted. Think he has done a few things very well, like working on players fitness, which is obvious for all to see now, was sadly lacking. Plus he got rid of the trouble maker,McGeady and realised that he couldn't give Grigg any more chances. The return from injury of Gooch and Wyke has played a major part in the resurrection imo.
me, without a doubt. Whilst the issue might be what he would be like if we got in the Championship, I would be quite happy to give him a summer window with decent financial support to see what he can do
Well this blokes certainly has... Dec 27th 2019:- @SkySports_Keith The main difference I can see is you no longer have a capable manager. The rest is the same. 29th Jan 2020:- @SkySports_Keith Sunderland now 5 points off the top - with a game in hand! 9 unbeaten and crucially showing they can go away from home and win ugly Much more like it. Things looking good. Phil Parkinson has shown a lot of class when getting some dreadfully unfair abuse last month. #SAFC What a tw@t.
I was massively underwhelmed when he was appointed but took the pragmatic to take a view after changes he made in January and where he had us come March. By December I wanted him gone, but now I take that back and 'doff may cap' to what he has done. But his biggest test is coming up this month. So back to seeing where he's got us by March.
The recent points haul compensates fore the minging results in Nov / Dec. He has developed a formation and a pattern of play that means we don't concede goals, but the jury is still out IMHO
Wasn't particularly excited about his appointment and had others ie Stendel, Pearson with Phillips above him. Once he was here i didn't want him sacked as i thought that would be even more detrimental to the club and team, and to give him time to settle at least. I was losing faith with the poor run, and even after the demolition of Tranmere 5 - 0 it started to look like we were going backwards, but there were encouraging signs even in defeat where we looked better and maybe unlucky in some games. I think the defining moment was Parky having the balls to fook mcgeady off. Good on him and he shot up in my estimation. He's doing a good solid job now and i like his character. Hopefully he gets us up this season, but i think he's shown enough now. I personally won't give him dogs abuse if we struggle again. Its still early days, but after a poor start he's done well to get us going again.
Wasn’t excited about his appointment, in fact I thought it was poor, but always prepared to give anyone a chance. Thought he was like a rabbit caught in headlights in his first few press conferences, reminding me a bit of Larry (Grayson). The results and performances got worse and I’m gutted coz I wrongly blamed him and wanted him GONE. Clearly there has been a problem in the dressing room (probably not dealt with by JR), and it obviously took him a while to get to the bottom of it. I think he handled the McGreedy issue very well, and he’s clearly a man who takes no pish!! He also realised the squad was unfit, and he’s tackled that, but you don’t get fit overnight. I did not see him turning it round, but he has, and I salute him. He’s also much more confident in press conferences, and not only are the players playing for him, they know he takes no s h I t, so he’s got their respect too. It’s still to early to say whether he will ultimately be seen as successful, but we are definitely heading in the right direction. Finally I would say that I’ve grown to like the bloke and I hope he does well. Bart
Didn't tink it was an inspiring appointment but could see the reasoning for giving him the job. Said in our bad run that he should get till the end of the window to see if he could get it sorted with a bit time and he has. Lots of clean sheets, some good football at times scoring a few goals and then last night was an ugly grind of a win. And as others have said, he's made a big call with McGeady and got McGuire to lose a bit timber. Really glad he's doing well, seems a genuine fella and I hope he gets us up as champions.
It's okay to say you have changed your opinion if facts changed... namely we have stopped losing football games and are winning a few..I have
I was not a fan of his appointment but after the 5-0 win against Tranmere I thought ok I might be wrong, after 2 wins in his firs 14 game I reverted to my original opinion. Now after 9 unbeaten and all of these clean sheets he is the perfect manager! All this proves is that I am a typical football fan.
My opinion changed when I watched us against Blackpool. That game felt like where we turned the corner mentally. The Coventry match was so bad I couldn't really see how he could ever get us onside. Then against Blackpool, he did everything right, and we somehow managed to draw despite having a man sent off late on, in fact we looked more likely to win it even with 10 men. At that point you could see that even then, we could put out a team that could in theory win games with him, but it would take a lot of buy in from players and better performances from lads up front because we were toothless. And in the end, he was working with a bunch of lads he didn't sign or know, even after Coventry there was just zero reason to sack someone because he'd got off to a bad start. Teams that make knee-jerk decisions end up with a bad rep, who the hell were we going to get in with Stendel at Hearts, Ainsworth apparently feeling slighted by the offer etc. So yeah, always been firmly in the 'don't sack him' camp, but even better now that it's not just on principle
Also - some of our fans didn't cover themselves in glory at the time. The abuse he took was ****ing stupid for someone who'd been at the club 5 minutes. Hopefully the last few months have taught a couple of them not to lash out after every loss.
Like dred I didnt have an opinion. I didnt know enough about any of the guys mentioned to understand who I wanted. I also thought he is here until the end of the season so have supported whatever he thought was right. What pisses me off now is all the f*cking fanzines trying to defend their actions by stating it was the fan protest that caused the upturn. Utter utter f*cking b*llocks. I want to see us get promotion for 2 reasons. 1, SAFC is my club. 2. I want to see these c*nts squirm and print a full front page apology if it happens. I have digressed however and that is probably for another thread.
I think the main thing you have to credit him with, other than the fact he obviously knew what he was trying to do all along, even if it wasn't evident on the pitch for a long while, is that he didn't bite when the going got tough. No histrionics, no defensiveness, he dug in and believed in what he was doing. That's why any reasonable person will have no problem turning around and saying fair play, mate!
I have definitely started to change my opinion on him. Didn’t think he was the right appointment and for quite a few games after that I thought I was probably right, however since the Doncaster away fixture things seem to changed dramatically. We drew 0-0 with Bolton Boxing Day and I thought he was nearly finished but then donny away the players put a hell of shift in and suddenly things began to change. Whether that is all down to parky or the fitness coach or getting McGeady away from the squad or a combination of it all I don’t know but I’m warming to him now. He has always maintained a positive outlook and said he will get it right. You can see his and the team’s confidence growing. Long may it continue. I’m definitely eating humble pie at the moment and hope by the end of the season I’m grossly overweight. Well done Phil.
