There should be a banner pointing out to the world that in his short time here Emlyn Hughes was on the highest wage he ever earned.

    £800 a week.

Followed by another banner pointing out that Emlyn Hughes called his son Emlyn and his daughter Emma Lynn.

It wasn't a world record either. But apart from that.....!

I think you should check that again. He was maybe on Stokes books at the time but he was playing in South America.
He was playing in Columbia when Hull City signed him. He was maybe on Stokes books at the time, ( it was quite a while ago) but he was banned from playing in this country and our transfer fee, which was a world record at the time for this type of deal got him back playing in the Football League. It was a very big story at the time and a lot of money which is why it is more worthy of a banner then 'Hull City cannot be coloured in' Which was my point.

I like it. A bit wordy, perhaps.

He went to Columbia in 1950, but only last six games before flying back to UK, where the FA duly banned him for four months and Stoke (who still held his UK registration) said they never play him and and put him up for sale. Nobody in the top flight would touch him and we ended up buying him from Stoke for a bargain £22,500 the following year.

Though in 1949, we did bid £30k for him, which would have been a world record fee at the time, but Stoke rejected it.

For more information on Neil Franklin, I recommend this remarkably good piece of literature - https://englandsgreatestdefender.com/

Exactly. City did offer a world record fee, but it was rejected. When they finally signed Franklin, the current record was £24,000. City paid £22,500. And on my calculator, that works out as less than the world record.

I realise bringing actual facts to a discussion is not really in UP's wheelhouse, much better to make stuff up about rugby league and how great it used to be to travel home on a coach minus its windows. But I thought others might want to avoid making the same blunder in future conversations about handsome well-chiseled 1950s larkers.

Looks like most are happy with the wacky 'Can't be coloured in' epithet.

Might I suggest we have that in the players tunnel last thing they read before they come out onto the pitch.

And surely there's more life in the 'FER ARK' thing also?

I realise AlRawdah excels in splitting hairs and this is another fine example. My point was what ever the finer details are, the Neil Franklin signing was more worthy of a banner at the KC then 'Hull City cannot be coloured in'
Also can you link me to the comment you accuse me of about the mini bus windows ? Because, hope your sat down before reading this, but you are wrong. I have never posted that. Sorry to disappoint you and all that.

Think I prefer the 'Hull City cannot be coloured in'
Did you know who Neil Franklin was until I posted about him ?

I knew the name, I think he's briefly mentioned in The Decade and OLM's post rang some bells, but he's way before my time so not really, no.

Before my time too but I do know of the history of our club and Neil Franklin was a huge signing and a massive gamble at the time by City. The signing made national headlines. There is story some where about 20,000 turning up to watch City reserves when he turned out for them.
Even the fact that City offered £30k for him in what ever year AlRawdah says which was a world record fee says something about the ambition our club once had. Even when we finally did get Franklin the transfer fee bandied about in the media was still only £2.5k below the record paid anywhere. We're talking about Hull City here, not Manchester United or Arsenal.
The Carter signing was massive news at the time as was Don Revie coming.
Also the three £40k transfer fees paid out for Waggy, Houghton and Ian Butler at the time when we were a 3rd division club were amongst the top fees paid. Man Utd only paid £50k for Denis Law.
Point being we have a rich history some of which is far more worthy of a banner at the KC then a piss take about not being able to colour our name in and one about how many floodlight phylons we once had.

it was actually quite a long way off the record fee, which had jumped to £34.5k for Jackie Sewell by the time we signed Franklin.

I’m sure there’s far better things to put on a banner than the ’can’t colour in’ nonsense, though we should probably come up with some that are actually factually correct.

Though it’s still better than a Waggo and Chilli banner.

I think you are getting your Manchesters mixed up. Easy with City being the dominant force there now. This is from Wikipedia but I am old enough to remember it::
Denis LawCBE (born 24 February 1940) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a forward. His career as a football player began at Second Division Huddersfield Town in 1956. After four years at Huddersfield, he was signed by Manchester City for an estimated transfer fee of £55,000, which set a new British record. Law spent one year there before Torino bought him for £110,000, this time setting a new record fee for a transfer involving a British player. Although he played well in Italy, he found it difficult to settle there and signed for Manchester United in 1962, setting another British record transfer fee of £115,000.

Followed by another that in 1983 a 'shot' at goal went so high that is probably still in orbit around the earth...

City or United they are all the same to me. I don't lose any sleep over what they do or don't do. Point was our three £40k signings at the time for a 3rd division club were right up there with the biggest clubs in the land at the time. The Law signing was considered mega money for a player and your 'estimated' figure was reported as £50k at the time. Not a million miles from our combined £120,000 outlay in terms of national headlines is it, especially for a lowly div 3 club ?
