UNIT GROUP 3622 GARDENERS

  GARDENERS plant, cultivate, maintain, plan and construct parks, gardens and landscapes, and inspect, diagnose and treat trees and shrubs.
  Indicative Skill Level:
  Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.
  
  In Australia:
  
  • 
    AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
  
  In New Zealand:
  • 
    NZ Register Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
  
  At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
  Tasks Include:
  
  • preparing and maintaining seedbeds and growing sites
  • propagating and planting trees, bushes, hedges, flowers and bulbs
  • preparing lawn areas by spreading top soil and planting grass, and by laying instant turf
  • maintaining planted and grassed areas by weeding, trimming, fertilising, watering and mowing
  • pruning trees and hedges, and installing plant support and protection devices
  • preparing plans and drawings, selecting materials and plants, and scheduling landscape construction
  • setting out and installing hardscape and softscape structures
  • constructing gravel and paved areas, walls, fences, pergolas, ponds, barbecues and garden furniture
  • examining trees to assess their condition and determine treatment
  • lopping limbs off trees and shaping branches using chain and handsaws
  • spraying and dusting plants and trees to control insects and disease, and felling diseased trees

NGC 3628

NGC 3628, also known as the Hamburger Galaxy or Sarah's Galaxy, is an unbarred spiral galaxy about 35 million light-years away in the constellation Leo.
It was discovered by William Herschel in 1784.
It has an approximately 300,000 light-years long tidal tail.
Along with M65 and M66, NGC 3628 forms the Leo Triplet, a small group of galaxies.
Its most conspicuous feature is the broad and obscuring band of dust located along the outer edge of its spiral arms, effectively transecting the galaxy to the view from Earth.

NGC 3628.
Due to the presence of an x-shaped bulge, visible in multiple wavelengths, it has been argued that NGC 3628 is instead a barred spiral galaxy with the bar seen end-on.
Simulations have shown that bars often form in disk galaxies during interactions and mergers, and NGC 3628 is known to be interacting with its two large neighbors.

The Federal Government has reversed a drought grant decision it made against the Moira Shire in Victoria earlier this year.

A small rural shire in northern Victoria that "wasn't agricultural enough" for a Federal Government drought grant is rejoicing after the decision was reversed.

Key points:

• The Moira Shire did not originally qualify for a $1-million Federal Government drought grant because it had an agricultural employment rate of 16.9 per cent, not the required 17 per cent
• This decision has now been reversed, at the discretion of Drought Minister David Littleproud
• Other local shire areas across Australia that have been rejected are also hoping for a review of the decision for those regions

It was discovered during recent Senate Estimates in Canberra that the Moira Shire did not qualify for a $1 million Federal Government drought grant because it had an agricultural employment rate of 16.9 per cent, not the required 17 per cent.

That was a surprise to the community, which sits along the Murray River in Australia's food-bowl region of the Murray-Darling Basin, and has a long history of agricultural production and processing.

The Government announced it had changed its mind at a media event with Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Nationals, Michael McCormack.

Local Nationals MP and Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, said that the Minister in charge would step in and the shire would get a grant.

"I have informed Moira Shire that they are going to be included in this drought assistance package," he said.

"There is an opportunity for Minister's discretion and David [Drought Minister David Littleproud] has used that.

"We have to put this through in a proper way and that is happening right now."
