I watched a couple of Auschwitz documentaries yesterday and bits of the service marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the camp. We're a ****ed up species.
Unbelievable to this day. I was stunned by every square inch I covered when I visited those camps. Words just don’t cover it.
Surreal experience. Auschwitz felt very commercially driven, although there were some staggering scenes and facts on display, couldn’t help but think it was too touristy. I was a bit disappointed with it, displays created for shock and awe and you end up feeling like you’re in a museum. Then Auschwitz-Birkenau, it’s as if somebody turns the clocks back, and the cold just grabs you, it’s deeply disturbing and all of a sudden it hits you just what they went through. Stood on that track I was just completely overwhelmed by where I was, that’s the place that I’ll never forget, Birkenau.
Also if you’re actually serious about going, the best advice I can offer is get a private guide, pay the extra, not the group one with the head set.
