Ok, time to pick up where I left off with a retrospective trawl through my music collection throughout the years. I finished last time at the end of the 80s so I'll start with 1990 over the weekend and then 1991 with the new week on monday. 1990 was a particularly good year on a personal level and an excellent one for music on both sides of the pond. I'll start with one of the all-time great Singer/Songwriter/Guitarists, Paul Simon who was dabbling with South American rhythms on his '90 album The Rhythm of the Saints (I can remember him being given a Saints shirt on Saturday morning kids TV st the time!)...
One from Alan Mcgee's Creation Records stable now, this is from House of Love's eponymous album with the butterfly cover...
This is from Pixies and Throwing Muses Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly's side project, The Breeders which went on to be a very successful band in it's own right...
This is a song that featured heavily in Spike Lee's excellent explosive film score about racial tension, Do The Right Thing, This is from NY's Hip Hop band Public Enemy's third album, Fear of a Black Planet...
Madchester and "baggy keks" were kicking off big time this year and one of it's defining albums was Happy Monday's Pills,Thrills and Bellyaches...
Here are some more nostalgic gems from 1990... This band was such a revelation in the era of big hair preening Rock bands like Bon Jovi, they sounded authentic and from the streets..it's LA Alternative Rock band Jane's Addiction..
Scottish Power/Jangle Pop band, Teenage Fanclub wore their influences on their sleeves, The Byrds, Big Star and 60s guitar driven melodies... Here is a superb track from their debut album, A Catholic Education...
Boston's Alternative Rockers, Pixies don't need any introduction, Here is the closing track from their third album, Bossanova...
Here is Neil Young capturing the zeitgeist of the coming Grunge explosion with a track from his hard rocking album with Crazy Horse, Ragged Glory...
This is a lovely jangly Dream Pop track from London's, The Sundays from their debut album Reading,Writing and Arithmetic..
